AF and explaining to a kid

posted 9th Oct
So my DD is 5 and has seen me in the bathroom while on my period. I told her that it is something that happens when you get to be a big big girl (that is how she refers to teenagers). Well neither my mom or little sister get a period for varying reasons. She asked them if they get bloods (I called it a period and she just learned punctuation in kindergarten so she said "no a period is a dot at the end of a sentence, that is bloods"). She is a very curious girl, she asks sooooo many questions. They told her no and thinking she was too young the told her you only bleed when you are hurt. Now she thinks that I am hurt when I bleed because they told her no one does without being hurt. I have tried closing the door and requesting privacy, but I haven't had that in years unless they aren't home. I already addressed it with m family and told them what I told her and would like them to tell her if she asks again (or at the very least direct her back to me if they don't want to answer it that way). Is it wrong I want her to understand it is natural for when you are older? It really upsets her to think mommy is hurt so often (I have been getting a period every 3 weeks that lasts just over 9 days....oh joy).

I would tell her that is is called Menstruation or a "monthly" and that it is normal and doesn't hurt at all. That mommy doesn't have a boo-boo

That it is a special kind of bleeding that is totally normal and part of being a woman

I would be honest with her. I know it didn't help what your family said to her, but try to explain it. Do you have any friends or other family who would be comfortable telling her that they 'bleeds' as well?

I just got my period again recently and my daughter noticed (she's almost 4), I told her that older girls and women have it and that it is a good thing, it means they are able to have children. Of course, we'll talk a lot more about it before and when she gets her period so she doesn't think that once she has a period that she should have a baby  . She seemed concerned before we talked and content with what I told her, and then ran off to play  .

I told my girls that mommy isn't hurt, it isn't scary and it's something that happens to you when you a grow up. I haven't had any more questions about it thank goodness.

We don't have locks on the bathrooms or I would use them. My family thinks it is weird I told her about what she saw. But the first time I told her she was sobbing because she walked in to tell me something and saw the blood. I wanted to calm her down and I didn't think telling her to just not worry about it and go away for a minute would help.

I will try what you said.....but I have a feeling this may become more detailed than I thought I would be at this point in her life. LOL She already has asked where babies come from. I wasn't ready for that. LOL

DS is 5 as well and used to ask alot.
I told him the same thing, that it's a period. And that it's normal, happens to girls when they're older, and doesn't hurt.
Now he sometimes like, sees my tampons and calls them "those things you use for that girl thing you have when you bleed"

I'm a weirdo but I think it's cute that she calls it bloods haha.
I would maybe ask your family, if it comes up again, to say that yes, it happens to MOST women. Because there are women who don't have a period, or don't have a regular one.

I think it's good that she knows now since some kids have periods at like, 8.
