Have you done it or would you do it?

My psych has suggested I give it a crack, nothing serious, just to meet some new people and build some confidence and self esteem (I completely lack both). Everytime I think yep Im gonna sign up, I get an attack of paranoia and freak out that someone from my tiny state is going to recognise me and tell everyone Im desperate because Im trying online dating, or that no one will like me or message me lol.

I have tried online dating. I used POF and OkCupid.
To tell you the truth..the majority of people on there are looking for sex. I met up with 2 people from dating sites and one of them had my interest until he said he may have an STD..I stopped seeing & talking to him after that.

If I were single I wouldn't get a dating account just cuz I know what they're like and I don't wanna waste my time on there.

Yes I've done it. That's how I met my current SO, we have been together now almost 4 years. It does build confidence a lot you just need to take risks and take chances. I never put my picture up, you don't have to if you don't feel comfortable, just make it clear in your "about me' that you do have pictures available.

i met my current SO on POF and im so glad i did it. he is everything i ever wanted in a man. i would recommend it.

if u call myspace back in the day dating then yes lol... i met a few guys ... were friends then eventually met and dated. if i was desperate enough id try match.com or harmony.com since they seem legit lol....

I did it. I wouldn't ever do it again though. I met some ok people, but also some crazies. After that I just stuck to meeting people through mutual friends, work, and school. But it's not for everyone, you might have a great experience from it. It's a 50/50 chance. If you're willing to take the risk go for it! It won't hurt, just don't expect to meet your soul mate or anything just let whatever happen, happen.

I think it's more than common for people to date online these days. I know a few people who's long term relationships started online.

Think about it, we all use the internet and social media in our every day lives- why wouldn't it's use extend to dating?

Give it a go, be cautious, it can't hurt to try.

Thanks ladies! It really does seem to be a 50/50 thing. I guess I'm just afraid to put myself out there   I might try it without a photo first and see how I go. If any of you did this, were many people interested or did you find you didnt get many messages?

Ive dated someone i met online. It wasnt a dating site but a social networking site. You have to be prepared for the ones who just want a booty call because it happens a lot. It was weird because he wasnt someone i would normally date but he grew on me, lol. We im'd for a couple months, it turned into phone calls, then eventually started meeting up after 6 months or so (this was before skype)

It was like a mad house!! I would get so many messages and replies it was crazy to think that many people were lonely. But I did end up in a relationship with one guy, it went good until he decided he didn't want to get a job after we moved in together, and had me working paying for everything. He still stalks me to this day, he would call me out of nowhere and know exactly what I was doing, who I was with. And I just recently found him on one of my friends facebook, and I asked her if she knew him and she said she had no idea who he was. He liked a picture of mine and gave himself away, then posted his status "I wish you the best, you and your child". Smurfin creeper...just be REALLY careful lol

That seems weird that your psych would want you sign up to online dating, let alone for self esteem purposes. But yeah, give it a shot. To ME it is 100% NOT the place for someone to go with esteem issues. However, it certainly does help with finding out who else it out there. What worries me about your psych suggesting that, is that most people on online sites, ESPECIALLY the free ones, just want to get laid.... so as long as you recognize that, then move forward and I think some good could come from it.

Eww he is a creeper lol. Well this has given me a bit of confidence that it might work, but I will heed your warning! Im really not looking for a relationship, just to build confidence, I actually think Im really unattractive, others tell me Im not but I dont believe them...
