home birth question

posted 9th Oct
After you have a home birth, do you and baby go to the hospital? or do you stay home.

Never knew the answer to this, just curious

Generally, unless there were complications, mom and baby stay home. I believe the pedi is seen within a few days.

I think a homebirth would be amazing, but i have way too bad of anxiety for that. I'd want me and baby to be monitored.
If I didn't have severe anxiety i could do it, lol

I had a home water birth. Here in Europe all of our prenatal care is midwives, they work on prevention of problems during pregnancy and supporting the body to do exactly what it was meant to do - birth. Doctors, OBs, are surgeons and focus on getting baby out and dealing with problems in labour after they occur. Hospitals are for sick people... you can see where i'm going here.

Here in the UK it is much safer to birth at home - where you and your baby have full immunity against the germs in your home environment, as opposed to the plethora of yuck in a hospital. The home environment is where you feel most comfortable as you have everything you need and know. Your cervix is a sphincter and opens best (less pain and quicker) when you have full control and privacy i,e at home.

Most complications with babies after a healthy pregnancy are caused by hospital interventions. Hospitals typically make you labour and deliver in terribly counter productive positions, they do not follow what natural labour is meant to be like and rush you.. having negative side effects on baby. This can result in c-sections, a little oxygen/nursery time after birth etc. This in turn affects the natural hormones and feeding that are supposed to occur and with bonding right after birth.

All in i just couldn't find any good reason to up my risks and birth in hospital. I had 2 midwives and a doula at home with me. I laboured with a TENS machine and birthing ball until i was 4cm dilated. I had back labour and no amniotic fluid left and i was in a wheel chair with SPD/pelvic gurdle pain and other problems. It was still very douable at home. Then i got in and out of the birthing pool as it suited, had time alone in the bathroom and bedroom and then finally delivered in the birthing pool, i got in right before pushing. It only took 20 mins to push, i had no vaginal pain due to being relaxed and the water stretching me out naturally, i didn't tear for the same reasons and because no one was staring at my crotch and inhibiting the birth process etc etc. I lifted my baby onto my chest myself, so he didn't need to cry being held by stranger s in the cold..as the room was dimly lit and humid.

It was the most awesome, mind blowing empowering experience i could imagine. They weighed my baby and checked him over, tidied up and left us to it after about an hour. Oh and they brought me toast and hot tea in my bed whilst we were nursing and snuggling. They came back to my home the next to check on breastfeeding and baby. I think they came on day 3 aswel. Then they came when he was a week old to weigh him. A pedi nurse came out to weigh him at 10 days to make sure he was gaining weight. I took him to the pedi at 6 weeks old for his final check up.

I wanted a home birth or a birth in a maternity unit rather than a hospital but i couldn't due to complications.
I think next time I'll have a pool birth at home or in a maternity unit.
I do love our midwives though, I couldn't imagine having a doctor.

I had complications and was under high risk consultant care . I went to the community midwife unit for the first time at 33 weeks pregnant and told them i wanted a home birth. A homebirth midwife came to my house at 35 weeks pregnant, dropped her 'kit' off at my house at 37 weeks and a few days later whilst i was in slow labour and a few days later my water broke. The consultant was an absolute plonker and i'm glad at 8 months pregnant i went to the homebirth unit.

Yea I think next time i would rather a maternity unit or home birth, it's such a better environment!
I really really wanted a natural water birth this time... unfortunately after 5 days of them letting me labour slowly I stopped contracting and dilating at 8cm so I had to go on syntocin

I laboured for 5 days too! It was just early labour though, then my waters broke and it took another 26 hours to have him. He'd stopped growing at 35 weeks and with my waters already gone i was starting to feel pressure to get him out before i had to have a section. My labour stalled and in the end it was the doula making me eat, and then giving me a deep relaxing massage that got things swiftly moving along again.

Aw labour sucks :/ it was my mum forcing me to eat, I'd already thrown up a couple of times when I had the gas and air, but the last thing you wanna do is eat!
When I went into L&D my student midwife was an ex-sports masseuse so I had the best back massages, really helped with the pains especially as DS was back-to-back   I think people really underestimate how much skin contact and massage can help with pain!

DS was back to back, we had very similar labours!

My midwife stays for all of active labor. Your mw can weight the baby, take vitals, help with birth certificate, and will tell you how to care for baby post partum. Some .midwives are certified to care for neonates otherwise you just go to a pediatrician. Home birth rocks. Loved it!!! So much better than hospital IME. <3. Just had a home birth a couple nights ago.
