Yeah, the AFP (alpha fetaprotein) test screens for birth defects. Down Syndrome may be one of them. Just keep in mind that those tests have a high rate of false positives.

Hey hun, I am sorry to hear this for you :/ I hope it truly is a false positive but there's not as many as we would like to think!! It CAN mean many different things though... Down syndrome, Spina Bifida, Gastroschisis, any neural tube defects, etc... It tests for alot. Are they setting you up for a more intense ultrasound? With my son our positive AFP was because he had Gastroschisis, which is actually pretty common now a days, but scary none-the-less. If this ends up being the case with yours feel free to search me out on Facebook and our International support group at Avery's Angels; NPO Gastroschisis Research and Support! Will be thinking and praying for you until you learn what is going on with your baby!! Good luck!

I had a positive AFP and so far everything is fine for my little girl. I've had the level 2 scan and they couldn't find anything wrong, but my little girl has consistently measured 1-2 weeks ahead since 12 weeks so the peri thinks it might be because she's older than we think. The AFP has a high incidence of false positives so try to keep that in mind until your level 2 scan. I hope everything is alright!

i tested negative on that test for ds but some of my blood levels were off so they gave me a 1/555 chance i asked for my lab results so i could look at the information myslef and all this was inculded in it they scheduled me for a level 2 ultra sound because i had a "bright spot" an indicator for ds in my routine growth and developement ultra sound so with that it brought me to a 1/305 chance but they offer a new blood test instead of getting amnio so theres no risk its 99% effective with a less then 1% false positive rate for dectecting ds they extract the babys dna from mine one good thing is it tells u the babys sex for sure lol my results came back negative and i passed the ultra sound for no other landmarks or indicators so it bruoght her chances down to less then 1% of having ds basically she wont be born with it its scary as hell to go thru so i kno how u feel also on that same test i had the gene for cf the only way the baby can inherit it is for ur partner to have it too but theres still a 1/4 chance the baby will but ask the doctor about getting the new blood test along with the level 2 ultra sound and it may give u some relief from worry i kno it worked for me my doctor also told me he thuoght i had a pretty low risk and everything would be ok but having it done gave me peace of mind reguardless the results i just wanted to be prepared

I have heard really bad things about those tests which is why most people refuse to have them. I really hope everything is okay and your baby is healthy take care <3

yeah i have the level 2 ultrasound on the 25th because they wanted to wait until i was 18 weeks..im not highly concerned with the cf or the ds..i have a 1/240 chance with the ds..im only gonna be concerned of the ultra sound shows characteristics of it

I did the test because the hubbs wanted it...but the Dr told me not to worry at all. He said most of the time they are wrong and not accurate at all. I'm kinda unsure why they keep performing this test if it seems so useless to most Drs?
If the Dr said not to worry, try not to
