24 weeks and cramping

posted 9th Oct
I am currently 24 wks. I went to the clinic today because I was having severe cramps in my lower abdomen / pelvic area. I thought it was just a BAD uti because I've had them before. I didn't go to my reg OB because the clinic was closer and was able to get me in fast. Plus I just assumed I'D go get some antibiotics and that would be it. So they tested me and said my urine looked perfect, no UTI and I should make an appt. to see my OB, Called OB and got an appt for tomorrow. Well I was hurting and worried if it's not a UTI, what is it? So my mom convinced me to go ahead and go to L&D. i went in, they put me on a monitor and checked my cervix. I am 1 cm and long. They had me worried at first because all she said was don't eat or drink anything, we're gonna call your OB and see what he wants to do. About 30 min later they come back give me some motrin and tell me to get dressed, go home, avoid sex, and stay in bed. She said my dr. will check me out more tomorrow and decide if I need to be put on bed rest, etc. So, I didn't really get a n explanation as to why I'm hurting like this. The pain is not as bad right now but I'm still very uncomfortable. I hope I get some answers in the morning. Sorry this is so long. I don't know if anyone will actually read it all. Any ideas what I'm feeling coul be?? And is it normal to be 1 cm at 24 weeks??

I don't have any clue what it could be but I hope everything is okay!
I'm due a day after you and I've been having some serious hip pain. :/
I was cramping pretty bad a few weeks ago but I guess it was my uterus stretching to make room for the baby because it went away within like a week.

when you've already had a child then yes it can be normal to be 1 cm. It sounds like they're worried that it may be pre term labour but it could also be an infection maybe.

I was having the same pains at 25wks so I went in to L&D and I was having contractions but they weren't making me diolate. They gave me shots to stop the contractions and monitored me for 24hrs. They told me I have a irritable uterus. Also to drink lots of water and lay on your left side so blood flows to the uterus. It seems weird to me that they would send you home being 1 cm were you having contractions?

Women who have already had a baby are sometimes naturally in a state of being a fingertip or 1 cm dilated. Her cramping/contractions may not have actually been dilating her, that might just be the natural state of her cervix now. That's likely why they weren't too worried about it

I've had three babies and only just found it out, lol I also have an irritable uterus in pregnancy, usually its absolutely no problem beyond being scary for mom who legitimately cannot tell the difference between that and the real deal without a cervical exam. Makes for alot of wasted trips to L & D but better to be safe and know thats all it is right!? I had the added issue of actually having had read pre term labour with a placenta previa in addition to the irritiable uterus, I made a lot of L& D trips because I wasn't in a position to try and wait it out and see since any dilation would cause a great deal of bleeding. When I had it in my next two pregnancies I discovered that I would just need to wait 2-4 hours while lying down and drinking a great deal of water to see if they'd get more intense and longer, if they did then it was real, if they didn't then it was just the irritable uterus. Good luck with yours and I hope it doesn't cause you too much trouble!

Thank you.. Yes it is very scary not knowing but I do the same as you did just drink water and lay down and wait it out.
