re: Detailed Sex Ed in middle school

posted 9th Oct
I'm all for sex ed but at 12 I'd rather keep it more technical and have the more in-depth video for an older age bracket. That's just my personal feelings, if I feel any of my children need a more detailed understanding I would prefer to do the talking myself when she can ask questions that she might not want to ask in a classroom full of peers. I know I wouldn't have felt comfortable asking about real life situations concerning sex in front of a bunch of my classmates. I just think that it's my responsibility as a parent to go into details about sex and not the school district. I would want the option to exclude my child from that program if I felt it was too much. I might feel differently when my kids are that age though so it's hard for me to really have a solid opinion on it.

I disagree.
I think it's a safe-net for those lazy parents though. Like there are some parents who won't tell their kids b/c of whatever reason. Where would those kids get the information?

It is, but it also entails EDUCATION, so a school is fitting. It is biology, psychology, etc. all rolled into one.

Like my DD, she will learn about BC from ME, but know that my preference is for her to be in a long term stable relationship before she even thinks about sex.

If other parents want to be lazy, let them. Let them have the pregnant teenage daughters because they were too lazy to teach their child about sex. Don't grade my daughter on something I don't want taught to her by the school system.

Abstinence only has been proven not to work...Comprehensive sex ed works.

And they should be graded to see if they're actually learning and paying attention. Not questions about where does the penis go, but things on ovulation, menarche, STDs, etc.

Because there are parents out there that are NOT being proactive and playing that role in their child's lives. You have no way of knowing whether or not your daughter will be having sex before 15, 14, or even 13. If she has a period, then she can get pregnant, and I honestly don't think there is such a thing as too soon ESPECIALLY when it comes to girls.

I don't see why people have such a problem with sexuality in the first place. If we didn't teach our children that it was a "bad" thing to do, then they wouldn't be so secretive about it and end up making foolish decisions. I agree, there is an appropriate age for that, but they need to know what it entails BEFORE the situation arises.

You can't expect your children to adopt all of your morals.

Look how well abstinence only sex ed is working... & you still have faith in that? lmao. Good luck dude. & sex education shouldn't be something personal. Being informed on their own bodies, & that of the opposite sex, can only benefit them.

exactly. a good Sexual Education class would be about a LOT more than just the sex part.

YOUR preference. I guarantee your teenage daughter will disagree whether or not she follows your orders. Also, that is horrible that you're wishing teen pregnancy on poor kids that can't help that their parents don't think they have to teach them these things.

It has nothing to do with being lazy. It's getting the information from more than one source.
I know how many sex talks with parents go...they simply say don't do it, it's for adults blah, blah, blah....
They don't break down ovulation or what herpes look like. Things like that.

Clearly old methods of teaching are not working.

AO worked for me until I was 20 years old. It worked for most of my friends because AO is the curriculum in the state of Oklahoma. We had a total of 3 out of the 150 girls in my graduating class to become pregnant before graduation. Seems like it worked fine for us.

My point is, why require a class that goes against the moral teachings of the parents?

Lol. Look at the entire smurfing country. Are you kidding me right now? Abstinence only is smurfing ridiculous. Good for you, you waited until age 20. A LOT of people don't.

Good for you and your friends...
But statistics don't lie. Abstinence only education has been taught in many states for years and it's NOT working. Comprehensive sex ed IS.

And comprehensive teaches about abstinence so how is it going against parent's moral teachings? All it is doing is showing ways to PROTECT yourself in case you decide to have sex but promoting abstinence.

People want to live in a bubble and think their kids are going to be saintly, but that's simply not true in MOST cases.
