Potty Training *advice*

posted 8th Oct
Anyone have any ideas how I can accomplish potty training my 2 yr old son?

My mom pretty much potty trained my oldest son since I was clueless.
I potty trained my daughter.
Now my 2 yr old son is needing to be potty trained and this feels frustrating.

I have...
* Had my oldest son go potty with him
* Bribed him with popsicles (his favorite)
* Taken him potty every 30 min and actually sit there for 10 min
* Taken him outside (and this worked ONE time)

Sticking him straight into undies isnt an option because I dont want pee on my carpets. Otherwise, I would because this is how I potty trained my daughter, but we didnt have carpets at the other house. I recently bought him pull ups and he pees his pull up.

What can I do?

I would be more patient. 2 yrs is still kind of early, especially for a boy. Pushing it isn't a good idea.

I'd stick him in undies, throw some jeans on over top and invest in a carpet cleaner.

My oldest was 4 when he was fully potty trained and so was my stepson. I guess I was kind of hoping that my son was a late potty trainer because I didnt know what I was doing.

My son wanted nothing to do with it at 2... as soon as he hit 2.5 he started and he was fully potty trained through the night and everything before 3. Don't push it. Honestly my son treated pull ups like a diapers and it did take putting him in underwear and having him pee on himself a few times before he really started to use the potty. Buy some carpet cleaner and go for it if you think he is ready, but he may just not be ready.

I feel like most kids will PT when they decide they are ready. But there are other things you could do to push it along. Do you have a potty seat in the room he's in the most? When you're at home have him naked from the waist down. As soon as he wakes up in the morning keep him on the potty until he goes. Make a HUGE deal when he does go, & also don't get super upset when he has an accident

I also wanted to add that you can buy those little plastic gerber covers that slide on over the underwear if you are really worried about pee on your carpet. They are waterproof and will help stop the mess, but still allow him to feel everything unlike the pull up.

So I guess this will be my only option. Well...I will be going to mom's tomorrow and getting the carpet shampooer then.

Thanks! I thought those were for cloth diapers, but I will definitely try this.

I've found that the jeans overtop the undies really don't leak much.
I'm mean and I let them sit in the pee for a few mins until it feels cold and icky. Doesn't take but a few times of that before they catch on.

I know they sell like 3T and 4T ones, so I am sure that would work lol.

We let DS run naked and kept a training potty in the living room. But when he wasn't naked, we had him in those thick training underwear and the rubber covers. He's 2 1/2 and has only had four accidents in the last three months or so.

I dont have a boy (yet hes still in the oven) but w/ my daughter we introduced her to the potty at an early age. Let her sit on her chair while we went potty. Tried encouraging her to go but had to back off. She decided when she was about 2.5 she was ready. Shes 4 still wears a pull up at night and rarely has accidents unless she cant get her pants down quick enough. I agree dont force them that never works make it fun and let them think its their idea to go   good luck!
