Dilating with a Cerclage

posted 8th Oct
Does anybody have any experience with this situation? I am just over 35 weeks and am set to have cerclage removed on Thursday. In the past I have had very quick and silent labours so I am concerned about going into labour after the removal.

Is your doctor worried? The ONLY worry I would have is tearing!

So far they don't seem to be - I have no bleeding but my concern is what will happen after the removal.

Well, I had mine removed at 36 wks and my daughter was born healthy the next day. You are in good hands! If you are super concerned and can withstand an amnio they can check the babies lungs.

I had the steroid shots at 24 weeks - cervix was trying to open then

Well it sounds like you are in great hands! Just watch for bleeding and you could be stuck at the dilation you are at even after removal. Had I not have GBS I think I would have stayed in light labor for a while but they induced me because of the gbs (got antibiotics). It took so long to dilate because my body was so tense.

I always end up starting to dilate at the end of the pregnancy (around 34ish weeks) before cerclage removal. It normally starts off with increased contractions. Then I lose my mucus plug and then there's a little bleeding and more contractions. Of the 3 cerclages I've had, I've never made it to my 36 week removal date. Sometimes it's removed in the office. Otherwise it's removed in L&D where I've been hanging out with contractions.

After removal, I'll feel a little crampy. I've bled various amounts with each removal. The first time I bled like I was having a period and the 3rd time i didn't even spot. I've never gone into labor after removal. Actually things seem to calm down and ironically, I end up being induced at 39 weeks (give or take depending on what's going on)

It is pretty rare for people with cerclages to go into labor directly after removal. There's normally too much scar tissue and it takes a while for our bodies to break it up. It can happen, but I wouldn't count on it.

Quoting XDG2009:" What is Cerclage?"

A stitch to hold a woman's cervix closed. Incompetent cervix causes painless dilation followed by labor.

It is a stitch that is used to keep the cervix closed to try and prevent premature delivery - mostly used in women who have experienced incompetent cervix
