What do I need to know about getting induced?

posted 8th Oct
I will be 39 weeks when I am scheduled to be induced. Before you all start getting mad, I am being induced because of low amniotic fluid and baby being large. I am excited and nervous at the same time. Any words of advice for the Daddy and I? We are going in at 8am on Sunday. I know that there are tons of variables, but how long did your labor take? If/When did you get the epidural? Were you able to walk around and be active while on the IV? I am most likely going to be getting pitocin according to my Doctor, who won't be delivering me of course, it's another Doctor in the practice but I'm told that she is great. Any tips, tricks, advice, etc are appreciated!! With that said- I know there are risks associated with being induced, I've been doing my research for weeks now. I believe that the benefits for my baby outweigh the risks. I understand that many people have strong feelings about induction. Thank you.

That it doesn't always work. And when it doesn't, it sucks.

It hurts, I've heard worse than natural labor.
I was induced. Had cervidal and then pitocin.
From the time they put cervidal in to delivery was like 31 hours.
I got the epidural when I was almost 4 cm and had been in labor for 12 hours (16 hours after cervidal was put in).
Tips- BREATHE! Find something that comforts you and go with it. I would rub the bars on the bed really hard when I had contractions.
Sleep as much as you can- limit visitors, you're going to be exhausted.

Take lots of things to keep you occupied because they can take awhile. If you dont want the epidural take lots of soothers of your own(favorite pillow, bed buddy) and distractions.

My first induction from start to finish was 22 hours and 43 minutes of pushing
Second induction from start to finish 33 hours with around 30 minutes of pushing.

No epidural with either one. I could have walked with the first until they put the monitors on the inside he started moving around to much for the belt monitors. Second I had blood pressure medication that causes dizziness so they wouldnt let me walk with that one either.

Thank you ladies. By it not working does that mean you had a C-section? I am assuming you did. I don't want that but know that it is definitely a possibility and I've accepted that. :-)

I had only been on the pitocin for a couple hours. I was just starting to feel uncomfortable when the nurse convinced me to get an epidural. I shouldn't have. Shortly after the epidural, my son's heart rate started to drop. I was in the operating room next thing I knew.

there was someone on here who went in twice for induction, she just never started contracting or dilating, and a c-section wasnt neccisary at the time, i guess thats up to you and your DR.. if your fluid is low that is a risk of cord compression ...scary stuf

I wish I could have said that   I was stuck at 6 for like 11 hours, then they gave me pitocin trying to speed it up. Didn't do jack. After like another 6 hours, I just opted to get him out. All in all I was in labour about 25 hours.

Labor for dd#1 was 28hrs and dd#2 was 23hrs. But when they tell you breathe..do. It helps trust me I have zero pain meds the entire time with dd#2 and breathing really helped like I was suprised because my dr said he would conside my contractions to be deemed "unbareable" because the strenght and everything.

But breathe and focus on the task at hand and everything will be fine..dont worry a lot and freak out.

I was induced with both kids and I did not have a problem. It was very relaxing especially with my son. I went in got checked. Got pitocin and then an epi and a couple hrs later my baby boy was here. Not everyone has a bad experience so do be afraid.
