oh yeah I was really hungry but they didn't want me to eat in case of side effects from the pitocin. I think it makes some people nauseous.

They are also afraid that if you need a c section ( inductions double your risk) that you may throw up and inhale your vomit...I vomited several times during my c section...it was lovely

Wow sorry you had a bad experience. I hope this third one doesn't give me any problems.

Are you having a C? Or vaginal?

That's horrible! My midwives told me to eat before going in for my induction (at that point I had already had two rounds of cervidil to ripen my cervix). And I had food while in labour at the hospital, they even brought it to my room at lunch time!

Labour makes some people nauseated. Even without food, some people throw up. It feels a lot better to throw up food and liquid than stomach bile.

Mamas really need to eat and keep being fueled through labor!...or your energy gets shot to smurf ..if the pregnancy is healthy and normal and you are having a normal natural labor I see NO reason for that dumbbb rule :/

crappy  .

I think there is a small risk of inhaling your own vomit if you are put under with a general. But this risk is slim and there is a lot of debate over whether this is a big enough risk to justify making women do so much work (labour) without fuel to help them through it.

Agreed.

My labour was induced though  . I had a blood test the night before and it showed keytones (sp?) in my blood, I did not have enough to eat and apparently this is a bad thing. They told me to eat something, even ice cream for breakfast if it was all I could stomach (so I did, eat ice cream for breakfast, that is  ).

I think women should be given the option since the risk is so small

Ice cream for breakfast sounds awesome...that's so cool they let you eat!

For my second child's birth, I brought a cut fruit platter from the grocery store. We were all eating it. I have very fond memories of my husband's strawberry breath while he was helping me through a contraction  .

I'm glad I brought that, we arrived at the hospital a little after midnight and my son was born at 1:55 am. We left around 5 am for home. The hospital staff did not bring me any meals during that time  . My doula did get me juice, water and toast though.

I completely agree. Tell them the risks of each and let them decide. But I feel that way about most things in life  .

I would hope that most would chose to eat.

I agree it should be an option if you want to eat. I never even gave it a thought when they told me not to. I am having a vaginal birth though if everything goes as planned.
