Measuring Behind/Not being checked for dilation yet

posted 8th Oct
I'm 36w6d along, I went to my weekly checkup today and I'm measuring at 34.5w instead of where I am now. I'm a plus size mom and this is my first child, so my OB said I shouldn't gain that much compared to a smaller mom who is expecting. Is it normal?
My second question is why haven't I been checked to see if I'm dilated any? Even my mom noticed it and said they should have started checking me. I haven't had any complications, so that shouldn't be stopping them. /: I go back on Tuesday, so wil they do it then?

Nope, they don't need to check until you're in labor if you have no problems. Dr's aren't checking early anymore really because it can cause problems but doesn't really tell you anymore.

Wow, they haven't checked you for dilation yet? Usually they start at 36 weeks and do it every week until you give birth. Confront your doctor next time, that isn't normal!!! I hope they check it next time   It just makes you feel better.

There is no medical need to check for dilation before labor. Especially when you aren't even term yet. More and more doctors are taking a more hands off approach. checking the cervix can irritate it and cause infection. As for measuring a bit behind thats normal too. If your doctor isnt worried then you shouldn't be either.

That's what I'm saying. My sister-in-law was only a month maybe less ahead of me and we had the same OB and he checked her every visit once she started her weekly checkups.

Actually, it is normal. There is no medical need to check if there is complication.

I was checked for dilation at 36 weeks and it was uncomfortable.. There is no reason to be checked b\c it doesn't mean that labor is any closer or further away. Since it was uncomfortable for me I have opted not to be checked unless I feel a change such as increased pressure or something.. The measurements of a baby isn't accurate.. I was measuring 2 weeks ahead a month later I was measuring one week behind and now back to one week ahead.. Its a estimate there is no way to be exact

I'm pretty sure there is no need to check for dilation. I know over here it isn't done until you are in labour
