I' ve just always saw it different, even as a child. When I got a spanking as a child, I'd always see it as a spanking but not getting hit. Now I have no idea why I view it that way, I see hitting as in : hitting a child anywhere on their body but their butt. Doesn't really make sense I guess, but its just how my thinking is...whether its right or wrong its how I have always thought.

LOL. Parent's who don't spank will take away privileges, ground their child, explain the seriousness of their behavior. Plenty of options are out there if people try to seek them. I am so tired of people pretending like your child is going to be a monster if you don't hit them. Some of the worst behaved kids I have ever been around were spanked and it did NOTHING.

I'm a spanker. I was spanked as a child, and it worked for me. I don't have any long lasting damage from it, but I do have problems stemming from the abuse and beatings I took as a child. There is definitely a difference IMO.

I think the same way. I got spanked, and I also got the hell beat out of me, even at a young age, I knew the difference.

I was never spanked and will never spank. My kids are 2,3 and 2 12 year olds.. almost 13 all of which are amazing, respectful and awesome fun kids. I have to laugh at spanking a 14 +year old. That's hilarious. Obviously spanking has already failed you if your kids are still being ass hats. And btw here you cannot legally hit a child 12 and above... which is dumb, why can you hit a little one? Also hitting a child with a "switch" or what have you is also illegal.

Lol I cannot imagine hitting my 6 ft tall 15 year old. He has never been spanked in his life and would just look at me like wtf just happened.

My dd is 19mos so I dont spank her..but my 3yr old I have. I for an I d against spanking. I ALWAYS do time outs/talking to them several times before I spank. My son started hitting my daughter since he started school and has come home with notes and bruses about another child hitting him, and it worries me a lot. I was spanked as a child and hit other kids growing up out of anger since my parents did to me..so I try not to spank my kids so they dont start hitting. My children are actually listen well so its not often I have spanked my son or put them in time out. Normally a good tlk will get it done.

So you hit your child to let him know hitting is wrong? That makes no sense to me.

This is something that has always thoroughly confused me.

It's completely hypocritical!

Also, the whole argument that they hit so the children don't get hurt running into the road/burning their hand on the stove/playing on the stairs thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me either.

Hitting a kid who runs out into the street is more about anger on the parents part. Ive actually never seen a parent who wasn't angry spanking a kid. That seems more like a self control issue justified as a method of discipline.

If my child throws his sippy in a tantrum, He gets time out.

If my child runs out into the middle of the street., he gets his ass spanked.

I believe in spanking in certain situations. However I also believe that only your hand should be used. No belt, spatula, tree branch, etc. You shouldn't be spanking them so hard it hurts.

That's my opinion on it. I was spanked as a child but my parents would use a belt and such, which I don't agree with.

Sounds like she's starting to avoid spanking because her son is hitting.

I agree completely. It's instant gratification for the parent.

And as some of the posters on here pointed out, as kids they would rather have been spanked than grounded. To me, this would show that spanking didn't actually teach them anything other than the punishment will be over quicker.

It taught me not to do the behavior again.

I don't see how you got it didn't teach me anything from me preferring one punishment over the other. I also liked grounding over doing double the amount of chores. Does it mean being grounded didnt teach me the lesson? No.

same here. it's not that i dont think i deserved every single one of them. it's just that they were given out of religious belief. i dont think I would be able to do it.
