I dont think anyone uses spanking as their only form of disclipine. If someone did that would be considered abuse imo. I only spank my child(ren) as a last resort. My daughter is 16 years old and I've never had any major disciplinary issues with her at all.

Spanking and hitting is different, imo.

Hitting a child open handed or/and with a belt,switch,etc is NOT okay nor apporpiate(imo) but I do spank open handed and on the butt only. Its not what I only do, but its what I do sometimes as a last resort and it works for me.

My children know that ONLY an adult is allowed to spank and that if a child ever does anything wrong to them, they are to tell an adult and the adult will handle it. What I do works for me , I rarely have a problem or have to resort to spanking.

Its one of the methods I rarely use but will use if needed. I do what works for me , you do what works for you.
