You said that any disciplines hurts feelings....I am just arguing that there is a difference between the feelings a child gets from having a privilege taken away vs. getting spanked.

I would argue that spanking isn't discipline, it is punishment....there is no real "learning" that comes from the action. It's a form of relief or instant gratification for the parents.

Also, reading the posts on here between you and the other person, you both seem to agree that spanking isn't a very effective form of punishment.

I was spanked and use spanking as a last punishment (I have a punishment tree I follow every time, I haven't encountered a super dangerous or scary thing that made me have to skip it).

I must say though I am floored by the poll results though. From most spanking threads you would think the majority of BG is anti-spanking.

I wouldnt say it is a relief really. It is a punishment, yes, but isnt all acts of discipline punishment for something your child has done wrong?

And how does it seem it isnt effective by our conversation? I would have rather got a spanking than a more drawn out punishment. It still worked. I knew I was in deep trouble for doing whatever I did and to not do it again. Works the same as grounding...you get the point across and that "mom means business."

I don't need to hit my children to train them to behave. Other methods work plenty well.

I spank and was spanked as a child. Its not the only disciplinary method I use but it does get used sometimes ( not often ) as a last resort. Imo, there is a HUGE difference in getting a spanking and being abused.

That may be true for some, but NOT all. Spanking was used in my household and it was done appropiately, not often and wasn't the only method used but was used sometimes, and I have always felt very close to my parents and they are always the first I came/come too when I have a problem, I did when I was a teen and I still do as a adult now. So yeah that may be so for some, but not all.

I was answering the person who suggested that children should fear their parents.

My son feared me. But he always came to me with everything! Even when he got his STD he camew to me first!! Which I just sat there for a sec thinking WHY ME??? but hey made fun of him ..told him I told you so and that was that  

I feel you should instill a small amount of fear in your child. Basically to let them know if they do this or that it is going to be a consequence behind it as a result. To the moms that dont spank, what are you going to do when your child is 14-15 years of age and the time outs, punishments, and "you disappointed me" things dont work? I know at that age i didnt care if i got punished or disappointed my parents. What i cared about is if i do this im probably gonna get my ass whooped so i wont do it.

Idk about you but i was still getting my butt whooped up in my teenage years and i wouldnt had dared put my hands back on my mom

I'm anti-spanker. I won't use that type of punishment on my child & I won't tolertate my child being around people that do.
There are methods that are effective and I don't have to raise a hand in order the achieve that.
I'll never understand why anyone would want to even go there.
I don't want fear from my child, I want respect. I want my child to fear that I'd be disappointed in him if he does wrong & not actually fear me b/c I will hit him.

It has been proven that after a certain age, spanking is not effective at all. I think it is 10-12ish, so spanking a teenager is completely out of the question.
Kind of like spanking a kid under 2 1/2 -3 isn't really all that effective, either.

I spank but didnt spank my son when he was teenager..my daughter is 11 last time she got spanked was when she was 7..I do believe in spanking..doesnt mean thats only punishment I use
