I've spanked my son when he ran out into the street and when he tried to pull down the door to the oven when it was on.

I don't know where I fall when it comes to pro-spanking or anti-spanking. I don't believe children who are never spanked will turn out to be brats and I don't think think those who spank are the worst parents imaginable.

My mom never spanked me or any of my 5 siblings.
I have spanked DD as a last resort and not for every little thing, only when needed. We would talk about certain things that didn't warrant a time out. But when her behavior did require a time out, we tried sitting in a chair, standing in a corner, putting her in our room because her room of course has all her toys, taking away toy... She would bang on the door, throw her chair, or run out of the corner and no matter how many times I would put her back, she fought time outs. She would cry at the top of her lungs to the point where she would get a bloody nose, and that made her crying 2xs worse bc she hates blood.
I stopped time outs and started counting to 3. If she did not do as I asked or stopped doing something by the time I got to 3, she got a slight spanking and would be sent to her room. She would cry, but she stopped and would come out and would say, "mommy I'm ready to come out". She has learned to do what is asked of her before I get to 3 and she doesn't get a spanking anymore.
She doesn't fear us, and we would talk about why she got a spanking. I veiw abuse as hitting with anger due to losing control of a situation. Spanking in our household was intended for discipline and never out of anger towards our child.

I spank. I was spanked and i believe there is a huge difference between spanking and abuse. I will hit my child on the butt or hand but thats as far as it goes and only as a last resort.

My DD is only 2. So I just do the sad face, most of the time she just laughs or acts like she doesn't know what she's doing wrong. At the most she'll get a little tap on the hand.

I spank as a last resort. I was spanked as a child, and more. I make sure to catch myself so it doesn't go that far but I don't consider a swat on the butt or hand abuse.

I'm just saying..you can discipline a kid any way you want and it is going to hurt their feelings. No kid is going to like a negative consequence to their actions, spanking or not.

Plus, I would rather get spanked than have to do a week of grounding. Being spanked sucked, but not as bad as not going outside or watching tv for a week.

There is a difference between taking away privileges and hitting someone....

exactlly !!! LOL..I would choose a spank on the but then going to ride my banana seat bike to the park!!..I am 35 so it was cool back then to do that and have that bike

However, it is still a form of discipline.

Ohhh I had one too!! I also lived in a house with a big swimming pooL!! Yes that was the perfect thing to take away!!..but my mom let us decide spanking or pool!! Never spanked one of my kids 8, 6 and 4. I don't know if I could commit by calling spanking abuse , but it makes me feel sick to my stomach. The whole theory of spanking doesn't compute. Showing a much smaller child that you are bigger and stronger by hitting them does not make them learn a lesson but fear their caregiver. I have great friends that spank, but in that department of parenting I don't respect them.

Eh, I don't agree with that. But hurt feelings is a little different than what I thought we were talking about.
