Breast feeding

posted 8th Oct
Ok so I think my supply isn't good enough.. My babes is only 18 days old and thy don't really seem to get full. The most I've pumped from one boob is 3 oz. London's weight wasn't where they wanted it either and I am supplementing with formula now as well. But you'd think when I supplement my boobs would fill up right? Well they really don't.. I'm concerned its me because I had this issue with my first born but thought it was due to starting BC .. Did anyone else have this problem?

Was your LO having wet/dirty diapers while nursing? If so, you were making enough. Your breasts won't always feel heavy/full. Mine never felt like that with my second child.

It's very unlikely you needed to supplement. Of course, if that's what you want to do...go for it. Breastfeeding/FF are totally your choice. But don't feel that you can't nurse your baby! It is very uncommon to truly be unable to successfully breastfeed.

supplementing with formula can actually decrease your supply since babies aren't "demanding" your body to produce more. I would try to bf as much as possible and only use formula as a last result. And as someone else stated, if they are having wets/stools then they are getting plenty. Some babies are just small, DD being one of them.

In 8 months of breastfeeding I have felt "full" maybe 5 times. Usually after a full nights sleep. As long as baby is peeing/pooping they are fine. Not all babies gain weight equally so as long as your baby is growing and on their growth curve its fine. By supplementing you are telling your body I dont need milk right now therefore decreasing your supply. If you want to EBF it sounds like your supply is just perfect

Dude, 3 oz is WAY more than enough for an 18 day old baby. You have more than enough! My breasts have never ever felt full, and my LO is 22 months now.

I can only just about pump 3oz from each boob now and DS is 3 months old! I know he get way more than that out my boobs though, I just don't get on with a pump.
Sounds like you're doing a good job

Try to cut the formula too, it messes your supply up!

If you are not feeding and supplementing your milk will go down not up. And 3oz is all the milk baby needs at that point. 3oz is also just what the pump can get out, baby is more effective at getting milk out than the pump. At this age there is a massive growth spurt and its going to feel like they are always nursing. Weight gain is going to be different for all babies, if they aren't loosing i would be hesitant to supplement at this point. As long as they are having pee and poopy diapers they are fine. Supplementing is a slippery slope and often leads to a drop in supply, which leads to more supplementing, and so on.
