11 year old with a tattoo, mom goes to jail.

posted 8th Oct
"Police charged a heavily tattooed mother after she allegedly gave her 11-year-old daughter a heart-shaped tattoo near her shoulder.

Odessa Clay, 30, was arrested last month and later charged with tattooing a person under 18, ABC affiliate WCTI reports. Clay reportedly said she didn't know tattooing a minor is illegal even with a parent's permission.
Clay said she used her own tools and numbed her daughter's arm to give her a small, heart-shaped tattoo near her right shoulder. She tattooed the outline of a heart but didn't fill in the entire shape.
Clay said the girl asked for the tattoo. She said she believes a former in-law reported the tattoo to retaliate against her.
Clay is due in court next month."

Wtf seriously? Am I the only one who thinks this is nuts? While I definitely wouldn't allow MY 11 year old to get a tattoo, that's not my decision to make for other people's children. I can't believe they put her in jail, I didn't know it was illegal even with a parent's permission either and I have tattoos and piercings both. I mean... it's not like she held the girl down and forced her to get a tattoo, she asked for it. Was it maybe poor taste, yeah, but definitely not jail worthy.
Your thoughts?

I don't think it's jail-worthy either. Stupid, yes. Not worth putting another poor kid in the system(or through the trauma of being away from her mother).

I agree with you. Stupid, yes, but a criminal offense? Ridiculous.

It's illegal to do on a minor, even with parental permission. The same should go for cosmetic surgeries, honestly. but it's not jail-worthy.

It was definitely stupid of the mom to allow her 11 year old daughter get something she'll either have to live with or pay a smurf ton of money to get rid of it when she's older but it's not jail worthy.

I love how she is smiling in her mug shot! haha

But yeah, I doubt she will get jail time, probably just a fine and a 'slap on the wrist'.

Right? To me it's a waste of time and energy when there are children in real danger out there.

I think its a little less nuts than altering a newborns body without their permission. At least at 11 they have a choice in the matter. Personally my kid won't be getting a tattoo until she can legally sign for it herself (and i have tons). But in some cultures it happens younger. Where i lived in michigan all the members of a particular tribe get a specific tattoo at 14. I think it being socially acceptable to pierce a newborns ears yet blasting parents that allow their children to modify their bodies is a little ethnocentric.

Oh I agree, I don't see much of a difference really. I'm not blasting the mom either, I don't personally think an 11 year old is mature enough to make that decision because it is permanent, at least you can take earrings out. But the point remains, at the root, what's the difference really?

Neither do i, the tattoo i got when i was 16 was horrible

But I don't care if others make different decisions. And smurf the cops for arresting her for that smurf. Smurf them for thinking that they can just impose their values on others. That is about regulating people, not protecting them,

How is a tattoo any different than piercings? It's all body-mod.
