How to put a breastfed baby to sleep without nursing?

posted 8th Oct
I nursed my first daughter and to get her to sleep i'd let her use me as her soother.. I don't want to be letting that happen this time around, but it already is. I'll feed my 2 month old before we go to bed and she passes out (as she does almost every time I feed her) and as soon as I take her off the nipple she's either awake or stirring until she wakes herself up. She will not take a soother.. What can I do?

This is my little boob monster   :

The no-cry sleep solution has a great system for this. And your LO is the perfect age to start.

My baby is 11 weeks and started out nursing to sleep but now the last time he nurses for the night he is up about an hour after and falls asleep on his own with no intervention from me.

With my oldest I think it was when he was about 5 or 6 months old that I stopped letting him nurse to sleep. I would nurse then bath, read a book and put him in bed. It took a few nights of repeating that but he started to fall asleep on his own.

As for your baby, let her suck until she comes off on her own. She depends on you for everything and if she won't take a pacifier there is not much else you can do. My oldest wouldn't take one either that is why it took until he was nearly 6 months to get him to go to sleep without nursing.

My 2 weeker will only fall asleep nursing as well....no pacifier...nothing works.....he will scream and cry if I don't let him, but it usually only takes a few minutes when he's tired, I just let him nurse til he lets go himself always works.

It is absolutely normal. I personally chose not to try to change it. I see no need to alter my infant's behavior. I let her nurse to sleep, comfort nyrse, nurse for an hour at a time if she wanted, dream feed, all if it. She is a perfectly happy, independent 13 month oqzzld now, who sometimes nurses to sleep & sometimes falls asleep on her own. I figure 'why rush it?' And sure enough, she grew out of it eventually

at two weeks they really can't learn to sleep any other way. In the womb they had a constant source of nutrition at two weeks they have to learn to eat when hungry and its a learning curve. Its totally normal for them to want to boob in their mouth until they pass out lol

That's a relief! I was like omg this boy eats so much!!!!! I didn't BF with my first which I regret so I wasn't sure. I EBF with my little guy now, and still only do baby to breast so it does get draining at times, but so so so worth it. Only bad thing is I have to check him cause sometimes he leaves some milk in his mouth as he falls asleep.

Its totally normal, and at 2 weeks there is a huge growth spurt (4 weeks to). it will feel like he is nursing 24/7. Yeah the milk thing is normal to,, not dangerous though. But you will get a soaked bed

I would love to be able to talk to you more about this. My LO is 11 months and we nurse to sleep about 98% of the time. I feel the same as you like I should let my LO do what is natural but sometimes I need someone to talk to about it. So many people don't "get" it and I just need someone who gets me sometimes I guess.

I understand COMPLETELY! Support is super important   I am fortunate to have an awesome local Attachment Parenting mom group I don't think I could survive without!!! I had so many ppl tell me "stop holding her or she'll never let you put her down" i'm SO glad I ignored that! Time goes way too quickly   ready she is SO independent! My daughter still comfort nurses, but she's so busy going and exploring that I'm thankful for the snuggly 'milkies' time we have. Feel free to PM me anytime.
