re: Crib Bumpers - Safe or Not?

posted 8th Oct
I think it really just depends on the baby. Yes, its a suffocation hazard, but so are the blankets or anything else u might use to cover the baby with if ur not swaddling. We used bumpers for our first when she started moving around and rolling because shed always get her arms and legs stuck between the bars. This baby will have bumpers on her crib as well, although i am crocheting the bumpers with a bigger crochet needle so that its not a suffocation hazard.

I use them. They came with the sheets and blanket we got. My LO is 1 year and 7 months and we havent had any problems with them. he moves alot in his sleep and hasnt had any problems. he uses a blanket and covers his face with it if its to bright. he knows now to uncover his face if he cant sleep. hes done that since he was a few months old. scares the crap out of me but no matter how much i uncover his face it ends up back the way it was. If your worried get the breathable ones or dont use them. even with bumpers my son got his leg stuck and twisted in his bars somehow

Nope SIDS. It stops air flow. I haven't fully looked into it but I heard enough that scared me away from them.
Suffection is totally different.

You realize there is no proof of anything causing SIDS, right? You realize it's all based on theories, right?

He rolls and army crawls a bit.

What exactly is the danger? How exactly would he potentially suffocate?

They say they can suffocate if they get their faces against the bumper and can't breath but if they have good control of their head and can roll then the risk is reduced. Same for them saying to keep a baby on it's back but once he/she starts rolling then obviously the risk is reduced IMO anyways.

I see ...

Smurf

Logan's been in his Pack 'N Play until now, since we didn't have room for the crib. He always wakes up scrunched up in a corner. However, he's got great head control and can roll both ways - tummy to back, back to tummy.

I don't want his limbs getting stuck in the bars, but then again SO told me himself that he heard bumpers were a risk ...

I don't know what to do

You could always put them on the outside or have them tucked in so only a little of the bumper is above the mattress. If he has good head control and rolls both ways then I wouldn't worry too much, they worry more about smaller babies that can't do those things, because if something were in his way of breathing( blanket, stuffed animal etc) then he could move his head. DD is only 3 months and WS asleep on her tummy and she moved her hand over her nose and couldn't breath so she moved her head and I sat there watching her.

Thank you so much ... this is a huge help.

I think we'll try putting it on the outside if we can't tuck it down far enough.
