How often does your breastfed baby nurse

posted 7th Oct
DD is 11 weeks old and has lately been refusing to nurse. She has done this 3 times now where I offer her the breast and she spits it out and screams at the top of her lungs. I give her a pacifier and she calms down right away I offer her the breast again and she screams again. She is at times going 8 hours between feedings because she is doing this. She has dropped down from 12+ feedings a day to about 6-8 a day. Is this normal or should I be worried. We are still having plenty of wet diapers but only a dirty diaper about twice a week

It is normal for bowel movements to start spacing out. My LO nursed every 1-3 hours until about a year, now she nurses every 2-4. She only had a bowel movement once a week until starting solids.

Yes! It is totally normal for her to start nursing less. For my baby, that happened at around 8 weeks. She went from nursing every hour (or less!) to nursing every 3-4 hours +.

It's also normal for a breastfed baby to poop only a couple times a week or even less. You really only have to watch for wet diapers with a bf baby.

Her pediatrician doesn't want her going more then a week without a bowel movement. She gets a big round tummy and cries nonstop if she doesn't go every few days and then I have to put vaseline up her butt   I hate doing that but it gets her to go. I am just worried about her not taking the breast for 6 to 8 hours at a time it makes me nervous. The ear piercing screams when I try to nurse her make it worse. She is hard core teething could that be part of the problem?

Teething can affect nursing   try doing skin to skin, take a bath (or shower) together, lay in bed & just cuddle to encourage nursing.

We tried skin to skin, I didn't think about taking a shower with her I will try that next time. I have been pumping and giving her a bottle when she does this last time I hand expressed and syringe fed her about an oz just so that I could get something into her. She loves water though so maybe the shower will help. I hope this teething thing slows down soon she is miserable   poor thing having to go through teething at just 11 weeks old

I would cut out the bottle. They can get used to the faster flow, and then get frustrated at the breast. Try offering when she is just waking up and sleepy, and try offering before she is 'hungry', so that she is not interested in the faster flow. Syringe feed if you HAVE TO get something into her, but if she is having plenty of wet diapers, I wouldn't.

I have the breastflow bottle she has to work harder to get the milk out of them then she gladly goes back to the breast lol. I have a really strong let down when I pump I can get 3ozs in less then a minute once the let down starts. I am looking into the teething tablets and I have chilled teething rings on hand at all times. I think part of the problem is she is so young and teething already she doesn't really understand what is going on or why she is in pain. I have numbed her gums before and she nursed afterwards
