Dangerous trip with Toddler

posted 7th Oct
Just got back from picking my son up and as I was driving 55 mph down the highway, I felt something tap me on my elbow. I look back and my 1 yr old is walking around! I dont know how to confine that child to a carseat. This is the 3rd time she has done it. I tighten her seat up, but she pulls the chest clip down, sticks her arms out and twists her body so she can get on her knees and climbs out. I had my husband tighten her straps just before we left the store when I noticed her trying to get out.
Even worse, there was nowhere to pull over immediately, so I ended up driving 2 miles before I got to a church parking lot and then I pulled those straps so hard that she now has red marks on her. Sigh.....but I guess that is better than her flying through the windshield if I wreck. Just a week ago, there was a wreck on that same road. A pickup truck went into the ditch (yeah...see...no shoulders on the road). The man died on the scene.

I would be taking stuff away from her and giving major time outs when we got home. She has to know that isn't safe. You need to explain it to her nicely so hopefully she will listen. Little stinker

Time to buy duct tape.

Seriously, punish the kid next time... a hardcore, serious, "listen to me or die" kind of punishment.

That is the thing...she just turned 1 in July, so trying to explain anything to her...she would probably look at me like I had a penis hanging out of my forehead.

Can you try a different carseat?

maybe you can get a safety clip and clip the harnes together under the chest clip so she cant push it down? idk if that would effect the safety of the seat belt.

for the people saying punish her when you get home...idk i cant imagine that having worked with logan, especially at one year, how are they supposed to know what they are being punished for?

I didn't mean when you get home.... I meant pull over. I didn't know she was only 1 though.

All carseats have that chest clip, so I have no idea. I am confused as to what I should do. Maybe I need to try google and do some research.

She didn't say she just turned one at first. My nearly 2 year old listened very well

i know, id be afraid to drive without someone else back there watching to make sure they stayed in, immediate action. nothing like severe punishment, still redirection if that works, persistance. i would think it would be even more dangerous that she was walking around and OP felt her-it could have suprised her. I would have thought it was a spider or something and freaked out heh....

My son has three different carseats and some are MUCH harder to adjust than others. There is one that even I can only adjust by a few inches when it's buckled.

I don't own a car and have never been in that situation...

I think if that ever happened to me and Novali, I'd have a "bad parent" moment. Pull over and flip out. i'd yell and then put her back and repeat "never again" and cry...

I will have to check into a safety clip you guys mentioned. This is crazy. I cannot buckle her up in a cart at the store because she gets out. Cannot buckle her in a high chair at a restaurant because she gets out. This child is something...thank God she is my last. My other 3 did not do this.
