DH and I have decided

To ERF. I'm very happy with our choice. She turned 1 on the 4th and she will stay rear facing until she reaches the rear face weight limit on her carseat which is 40 lbs. I have noticed a lot of my friends turning their kids before they're a year old or the day they turn a year. Which brings me to another question, a girl on my FB had received what looks like a old used carseat (it looks like it's old enough to be expired) for her daughter for her daughter's 1st birthday. Not only does it not look like her daughter even fits in it correctly, but she seems to think that just throwing a carseat cover over it will make everything okay. I don't exactly know how to bring up the safety issue to her about it. I have a feeling she'll get a little upset at me and just plain be rude about it. I've already posted a link about carseat safety but idk if she saw it. I just don't want to come off as rude or a "know it all" to her.

Just share your knowledge with her in a non threatening way and like you just learned the safety information yourself.

I would let her know that she could get a ticket. I tried explaining that to my mother's son(her kid is 18-19 pounds and 11 months) and she's had him front facing a while now.

I would say nothing. If she is not looking for advice then don't give it. You don't actually know the seat is expired.

I was really hoping she would have seen the link I posted. I've thought about just posting a couple more about it to see if she says anything or asks. I've also thought I could just send her PM with the link and tell her to check it out because it has a lot of interesting facts I didn't even know.

Her daughter is a year old now so I'm not really sure if she could get a ticket for it.
A friend of ours had gotten into a car accident with her daughter who was still under a year front facing and didn't get a ticket for it.

You're right that she didn't ask for advice and that I don't KNOW that it's expired. I was just thinking I could give a friend some advice and didn't know how to go about it without sounding rude. The carseat does look quite old though. It's quite dirty and has holes and rips in it.

I understand wanting to help her out, but it will more than likely backfire on you.

It probably would. I just wish that people would do a little research about things like this before they unknowingly put their kids in danger.

I agree, people are really lazy about making important choices for their kids. And I'll never understand why people are in such a rush to turn babies around.

I'm not going to lie, for awhile I was saying I'd turn my daughter as soon as she turned a year old. But after a friend of mine got into a car accident with her daughter who was front facing, I did some research I decided against it.
