Totally Annoyed

posted 7th Oct
So I have 5 nephews all under the age of 8 and it seems everytime I got to my moms (who babysits them all at different times) one of them has just been there that is sick with something and it pisses me off. I'm 39 weeks pregnant and today I went to my moms and I was there for a good 30 minutes and she says to me "Oh yea one of the boys may have been exposed to hand foot and mouth disease and has a rash on his face and a blister on his hand" This is NOT the first time one of the boys has had this but I feel like since I've been pregnant they are always sick and no one tells me until I'm already exposed! I have a doctor appt in the morning and I'm going to talk to the dr with my mom sitting there to hear it too. Has anyone else been exposed to this during your pregnancy?? I haven't been around the child who may have it but the child was at the house I was in today all day yesterday and my mom was changing his diapers and I was with her all day today and will be tomorrow too. What happens if I have this or someone is a carrier of it and they give it to my newborn?? I will ask all of these question in the morning at the doctor but just wanted to know if anyone else has dealt with this too?!?!?!

I believe hfm is only contagious when the fever is present, days before the rash and sores appear.

I think your right to talk to your doctor, since hand foot and mouth is very contagious.
I would start calling your mom before you head over there and asking if one of the children is sick before heading over there, Especially when you have the newborn.
Also you can ask people to wash their hands before touching baby ( to minimize germ spreading).

My dr said hand foot & mouth is only a concern when you are in your first trimester but definitely ask tomorrow

Try not to worry too much, my daughter goes to kinder and some kid had hand foot and mouth....this was about a month or so ago and I'm yet to get it, and same goes for my daughter, from what I've read it's quite rare for a pregnant person to catch it.

That would be good news! My nephew that was exposed was with another little boy who has been confirmed he has it so yesterday they noticed he was coughing and has a rash on his face and my mom said she saw one blister on the palm of his hand. I've read some stuff online and it says that if your newborn is exposed in rare cases it can cause organ failure. I know this sounds awful but if my nephew has it I don't want them at the hospital when my baby is born which could be any day now cause I'm not willing to put his life at risk so they can see him when he's first born. I know I'm a crazy mother already and he's not even hear yet I just feel like I'm always trying to dodge one of the kids being sick so I don't pass something terrible to my unborn baby!

I'll check out the link, thank you! My older nephew has had it before but I've always stayed away and not gone to their house. Hoping it's fine I'm more worried about getting it around the time I deliver and passing it to the baby

Honestly, I wouldn't want your nephews there at all.

Check to see if your hospital has a siblings only policy. Most do, especially during flu season.

Yeah I think that's the part that makes me the most mad, I had been texting her all day yesterday and this morning and she waits till I'm in her house where the kids were ALL day yesterday before she mentions it. I'm already hormonal so to tell me that made me wanna explode! I've washed my hands like 5 times and used hand santizer as soon as I got in my car. I know my kid will be sick when he's here but I don't want to expose him to something I can avoid!

Yeah especially if they are sick at the time he's born I don't want them there either. I'm worried about my brother and sister in law being carriers of HFM and holding my newborn who has no immunity!

Well, if they have a fever they shouldn't be around a new born to begin with....it's common sense, and you shouldn't have to tell them that. I hope they'd not be stupid

Very very true! I hope not too. Ugh why do people have to do stuff to stress pregnant women out?!

When I had DD I wouldnt let anyone touch her without washing hands first, Personally if I dont have to take care of a sick newborn all the better.

Good to know! I don't think he had a fever yesterday no one told me that but I wouldn't be surprised if they are just not telling me everything. Good thing is I haven't been around the actual kid who has it just in the same house he was in and around the same people he was around. I hope I have immunity against it and I guess I'll keep my legs crossed a little longer to keep my baby in my belly LOL
