How do you wash dishes?
posted 7th Oct
That is if you don't use/have a dishwasher.
My brother thinks I'm odd because I do dishes in a certain order but to me it is normal. Our mom had an order too, I learned it from her although I do it a little different. I like doing the cutlery first, then cups, plates, pots. I can't have dirty dishes in the sink while doing, they all have to be out and I usually scrub a few until the sink is filled, rinse and repeat with the rest of the dirty dishes. He likes to do dishes with all the dirty dishes in the sink, wash whatever he reaches first and rinse right away.
He thinks my way takes longer but I really just think I take longer because I rinse before I wash and he doesn't.

I wash them like you.
ETA: I don't rinse them is a sink of water, I let the faucet run to rinse. But I use the same order.

Our sink is tiny so there is no having them all in there. No certain order though

My husband and I lived in a house with no dishwasher during college. I don't fill up the sink with water and wash- I know it's a waste of water to rinse as you go, but I'm a little bit of a clean freak, and rinsing clean stuff in dirty dishwater is disgusting. I also rinse before I wash something, then again after.
I always washed the cutlery first, then the glasses, then plates, then pots and pans last. We would run out of hot water by the time I was finished, so I wanted to make sure I was using hot water on cutlery and glasses.
ETA: We didn't have a double sink, so I would take all of the dishes out of the sink. We have a double sink now, so when I wash the pots and pans (we have a dishwasher now, too) I leave them in one side of the sink and wash them in the other.

I wash plates and and utensils (sp) then cups and tubberware. After its pots and pans i also keep them on the counter in order as i wash them and rinse as i go like you. I cant throw them all in together it annoys me.

Definitely! And a specific way of stacking them. When SO offers to do the dishes I tell him not to worry because I know he won't stack them right lol.

I do cups, then bowls and plates then tupperware and odd items like the cheese grater, then the big smurf - like pots pans strainer mixing bowls etc.
I do the cutlery before the big smurf....but I throw them in right away and do a bit here and there and finish them up before I get to the big stuff.
I kinda knew it was anal of me and think about that when Im doing dishes....but writing it out like I just did......thats really anal. Wow I feel dorky right now

I don't have a dishwasher, either. I usually fill one side up with soapy warm water and soak the dishes for a few minutes, then scrub each one in the other side and rinse. I usually scrub and wash the pans while the plates soak, then I scrub and rinse the plates and then change the water and do bowls and plates.
I make SO do the cutlery, I hate that crap, I have no idea why.

Same way you do. That's what I was taught in home-ec, lol.
Small first, biggest last so it has time to soak. I have a dishwasher, but I try to use it as little as possible.

Haha! My SIL and brother both do dishes the same way, so weird to me! hey never stack things how they should and never have enough space! you feel like you're about to break something to get something, I hate it! I'm glad I'm not alone on this lol

I hate it too. I think used cutlery is the most disgusting thing ever.

We have a dishwasher but it's used as storage, we never use it.
My mom actually taught me cups, silverware, then pots and big stuff because she went by what had the least grease to the most but I like doing from small to big.

I do the "least" dirty things first (cutlery and cups) then plates then the nasty greasy pots and pans, that way you use the cleanest water on the stuff that it matters more. I also rinse my dishes as they get dirty (i hate doing dishes so I make sure its worth doing before doing them, so I rinse them off so they're not as nasty) but i guess if my mom hadn't ever taught me that I would probably just through them all in. haha.
