What is fibromyalgia like for you? How were you diagnosed?what do you do for management?

I've been in near constant pain for months ... its gotten worse over the past two weeks since my wreck but damn. This morning I didn't want to get out of bed. My everything hurt. Even the heavy blanket on my bed touching me didn't feel right.

My husband was diagnosed with fibro a few months back. His doc gave him samples to try and see what would work best.

I was only diagnosed in the last month, so very recently, but I've been dealing with on and off pain for a long time. I've heard it can start out like that, and then you just keep having more "bad" days.

On my good days I feel sore and achy. Like when you exercise too hard and the next day you're sore. Or like a deep bruise. On bad days it hurts much worse, but still deep pain. I get a lot of pain in my chest wall on bad days and it's horrible. Mostly my pain is in my knees and my shoulders/neck/back area. It radiates down to my hands a lot.

I'm on muscle relaxers at night to help me sleep and thats it so far. The pain keeps me up and keeps me from sleeping well. However, next Monday I'll be going in to discuss other treatments because this isn't working for me. I'm thinking either Savella or Cymbalta.

I don't think you're bonkers, I just think it's an awful far leap to make considering your stress levels. Clinically, it *does* sound like fibro, but As we all know, webMD can make a head cold sound like the God-damned bubonic plague.

Oh, and I was diagnosed because I had a lot of pain and fatigue. They ran every other test they could (checked for RA, Lupus, vit deficiencies, stuff like that) and checked the 18 tender points. Usually you need at least 11 of those points to be tender, you need pain on both sides of the body, above and below the waist, and it needs ot be present for at least 3 months.

Fatigue? Check.

Im always tired/have no energy....but how much of that can be attributed to my bipolar/depression idk

Yeah, diagnosing fibro is sort of hard. There really aren't any tests, no specific signs. It can look like a LOT of other things. People with Fibro often have depression, but whether they go together or one is caused by the other, no one knows. It sucks because there is no test. There's no xray to show it. Nothing. And treating it appears to be difficult too since there isn't a single "cause" everyone agrees on.

Things that are either part of it or go hand in hadn with it:

fatigue
pain
IBS
difficulty sleeping (a BIG one for most people)
headaches
sensitivities to lights,odors, or sounds
depression and/or anxiety

I think the biggest problem in getting a diagnosis is that those symptoms are also the symptoms for EVERYTHING else, too.

Exactly! Fibro is basically the catch all when nothing else that fits is it. So, it can look like lupus, or RA, or all sorts of things. Then they test for all of those, and if none of them work, they figure it must be fibromyalgia. This is why diagnosing can often take years and years. I think the tender points tend to be a diagnostic tool that helps separate it a bit, but at the end of the day fibro is basically a diagnosis when nothing else fits. Probably why it is also so hard to treat
