Fit and Fat

posted 7th Oct
Hey Ladies!

I need to get more active. Homeschooling and being in grad school get hectic and the attention I give to making sure I'm physically active falls to the wayside. I know that physical activity is an important health factor and want to have a place here to talk about it without an emphasis on aesthetic outcomes.

So here is a place to talk about being fit and being fat and all things related.

I want to learn tai chi and start some yoga, maybe. Those things seem like they would be fun. There are places that do "Big Yoga" and I'm going to look into that. Also, there is a fit fatties forum at http://www.fitfatties.ning.com/

What are you doing?

(Disclaimer: You don't have to be "fat" to be in here but this space is specifically for people who are wanting to improve health and not focus on weight loss. All are welcome as long as we nix the diet talk).

I got a fitbit and I love that stupid thing, haha. It tracks my steps, flights of stairs, general calories burned, and time active. I like it because you can set your own goals and then try to meet them. It gets me up and moving a bit more, walking more, things like that.

I find it really motivating to just get me to do more "general" active.

I also love lifting weights. I can't do it that much anymore (I swear I just can't increase the weight anymore, sigh). I was running, but I can't do that either.

That sounds like an interesting device and I can see how it would be motivating. You can set it and kind of make a "game" out of it.

I used to like doing weights, and I still kind of do. At the university gym it is where all the beefy young athletes strut their stuff so I still find it a bit intimidating. I've been made fun of a time or two there too... but I don't do the leg left machine thing anymore because I hurt my knee on a few years ago. Something popped mid lift and my knee has never been the same.

Ack, thats no good about your knee! I use free weights and do it at home. The fitness center at my apartment complex always has buff guys in there lifting and I feel so weird. I'm sticking with it, but I used to be able to go up in weight after a week or two. I am stuck though, at a pretty low weight. Like, I almost physically can't do it. It really sucks, and I'm thinking it's the Fibro.

I do love the fitbit. You're exactly right, it's like a game. There is a little flower on teh deviec and the more active you are the more leaves there were on it. And I like that you can set the levels. Like, I can't make it to 10k steps almost ever, so I set my goal lower. And when I'm close? I'll get up and do some step aerobics at night, or go for a walk. Also, I like it because I think being more active throughout the day is better than sitting all day then running a mile on the treadmill, lol. So I like see how much of the day I am sedentary, how much I'm lightly active, and so on so forth.

I wish I had the motivation to work out lol.   Why is all of the stuff that is good for you so hard to do? Like eating healthy isn't as good as a cheeseburger and a coke. Working out isn't as fun as relaxing in bed or on the couch lol.

I think it's hard at first, but once you start it feels great! I know, I never thought that. But when I drink a ton of water? Coke doesn't even taste good to me. When I'm used to going for walks, sitting on my butt doesn't feel that great. I love the feeling I have after a good workout (endorphins thank you!). I think it's one of those things that you have to do, and then you find how much you really love it!

Eating healthy doesn't have to be burdensome. There is lots of tastiness to be had! Like a juicy steak with swiss and mushrooms and some other yummy vegetable that you enjoy eating. Red potatoes are amazing and technically better for you than the more starchy russet. These are just examples.

And physical activity doesn't have to be something you hate. You could start by going bowling or playing putt-putt.... or whatever. Just a nature walk is great too.

I crave the burn of soft drinks, not the sugar so much. We bought a soda stream, that you can carbonate water with... and grape juice and carbonated water go very well together over ice.

See, I used to love Soda. I think it was more the habit though, the ritual. Same with coffee for me. The funny thing is I do love water, it just never sounds "better" then soda. Now though I'll still drink it sometimes, but I don't like it, haha

I go on and off of soda. I'll refrain for awhile and then have it for awhile. My nutrition lady told me that if I had to have soft drink to drink something with sugar and not artificial sweetener.... which means something from her... she is like an anti-sugar queen! Sugar makes me feel bad though. I wake up the next morning feeling like I'm having a hangover and my body feels like its been run over. According to my lady, that's because thyroids don't like sugar and they hate splenda. So, I try to listen to my body most of the time, but I partake on occasion.

Gluten on the other hand, I can't hardly function after I eat that sometimes. It's like my body goes into hibernation. One time I woke up all night after eating pizza feeling like I was suffocating. And it spikes my blood pressure. No bueno. And my local subways decided to stop carrying gluten free bread!

Oh I understand the gluten. I'm currently trying to go back on gluten. With the Fibro stuff I'm guessing that maybe it isn't a direct gluten intolerance, and maybe gluten just aggravates IBS. So I'm hoping there is a "good" level, where I can have some sometimes, or just a little, you know?

Yeah... it's hard to avoid too. I have it very occassionally, like when I have no choice in the matter and need to eat.

Food sensitivities are crap.... I'm not supposed to have cheese or milk (but I can have swiss and heavy cream) but I still have it from time to time... and soy is off the menu but what can you eat that doesn't have soy... so I know I get some of that too from time to time.

I think I may be developing a new allergy to. I had frozen ice coffee the other day and I started having an anaphalactic reaction to it. There were no eggs or peanuts in it either. My immune system is psycho.

It would be nice if I could just choose the foods that I feel like are good for my body without all the extra restrictions.
