When is the appropriate time to potty train your child?

posted 7th Oct
I personally started when my children were walking and talking clear enough to tell me they had to go. One i started at 2 the other a little before and they each were fully potty trained (day & night) by 3, but ive seen a lot of moms on here who have done it imo kinda late. Again I said IMO. What are your thoughts?

When they're ready for it and show the signs. There's no set age to potty train a child.

When they are ready. You can't just force it (or my 2.5 yr old would be PT).

When they are ready.

There's no age that's right or wrong, some kids are ready later, just the same as some kids walk and talk later. Your opinion about it being late, means smurf all to a child thats not ready

OP, you waited until your child was ready so what's wrong with another parent waiting until theirs is ready? Regardless of age? Is it that parents should wait until they are ready until they get to a certain age then start forcing it?

There is no set age. Every child learns or is ready at a different age. You shouldn't try and force it. Some kids are ready at two some are ready at three some are ready earlier or later than that.

I understand the whole waiting until they are ready thing but what if they arent ready until maybe 5-6 or even later? I mean that does more harm then good correct? Especially with starting school and other extra curricular activities.

I started as soon as my daughter would tell me when she had a dirty diaper, which was abou 20 months. However, the CDC on base would not get on board until the 2 year old room (no pottys in the 1 year old rooms). We started as soon as she went into the 2 year old room at about 23 months. My daughter is stubborn and fought me tooth and nail, but we were 100% successful about a couple weeks after her 2nd birthday. For the next year she would have accidents sometimes and wet her bed, at night not during nap, about twice a week. About a month before her 3rd birthday all accidents and night wetting completely stopped, not one. Some people told me I started her too early, and that is why She fought me, but ya know she would tell me she had to and understood the whole process... She was ready just stubborn and I wanted her out of diapers! She was always very proud of herself that she wore undies when many of her friends did not!

Are you familiar with the concept of special needs children?
