If you had a reflux baby.

I did not ever imagine that my baby would have reflux My heart breaks for her. We are pretty much 100% positive that is what she has. Since birth it has been slowly getting worse (she is 12 days old) she cries these really sad cries in her sleep, she will cough or growl a lot to get the acid out of her throat, she has many sleepless nights because she is afraid to nurse, and this baby loves nursing, sometimes she will just want to fall asleep *next* to the boob because she knows it will make her sick, every burp she pukes, the only difference burping makes is she wont projectile vomit it out. She has this little cry after each spit up and always has the hiccups after getting sick.
We go in for a pedi visit tomorrow, I hope we can figure something out to make her feel better. What was your refulx "diagnosis" like? Did you breastfeed a reflux baby?Any insight for me?

We put our son on AR formula had to switch tp Alimentum and add oatmral to thicken..he is on zanta, twice a day it does help we also switched bottles to dr browns we still bf 4/5 times a day bit he spiys up a lot when we do

My doc started her on zantac.... She was a different baby within twenty minutes! She exclusively bf for 7 months, and then continued to bf until almost 18 months

"Looks like reflux. Here's a script" that's how it went. bf for almost 3 years. I also had a really forceful letdown that didn't help matters so we had to experiment with nursing positions.

I have my older one empty the boob a bit before nursing and it really helps. But she still spits and hurts.

Our son has silent reflux he screamed all the time from birth till 5 months, at 3 months he got put on spoonfed rice cereal, it didn't work so by 5 months we had enough and his pedi prescribed losec, he has been a different baby since he started it a few weeks back.

Sounds like reflux...both my girls have it...pretty bad.
They may have you change your diet if you haven't already (cut out milk, dairy, anything spicy, etc) If they start meds, it will likely be Zantac...usually if the med is going to work, they are like a new baby within 24 hours...it's amazing!!!
Zantac is a weight based med though so it *has* to be adjusted frequently (sometimes every 2 wks) And sometimes it takes a while to figure out what med/dose works for each baby. We've tried Zantac, Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium all. If you have a swing, you might try that or sleeping in the car seat...the elevated position often helps the reflux letting them sleep better.
I used to nurse sitting on towels or a thick blanket as my oldest was a projectile vomit girl regardless of what I did (even the meds sometimes)
ETA--my ped never recommended rice cereal

My son had to be put on meds and special formula, bottles.. the whole nine yards. When he was finally able to eat and not puke like a possessed demon in a horror movie, I felt so much better for him.
Another thing that is a must, is to keep her as upright as possible for at least 30 minutes at a feeding, then lay her down. We got a crib wedge and had to let our son sleep on his stomach because when he was sleeping on his back he would choke on his vomit.

Well, I do know that breastfeeding is BETTER for babies with reflux because it's gentle on their tummies. I hear formula is more acidic and can make reflux worse. So you're doing the right thing to begin with. Second off, the pediatrician will end up giving you Zantac or something similar to curb it or help make her feel a little better. I found it to work the best for Christopher since he had milk allergies too. A couple of reflux medicines had milk product in them. Nothing is 100% and as like colic, it takes time to outgrow. Good luck. I went through hell and back with all of Christopher's tummy problems. I have a lot of insight if needed

Yeah! If baby needed formula, hypoallergenic is most gentle. We used the Enfamil Nutramigen (which is the same as Alimentum basically).

My girls had it too. It was awful. Before we even left the hospital with her, she had lost two pounds from throwing up everything we fed her. We tried everything when we got home. She threw it all up. Didn't matter what it was. Her doc prescribed over the counter tummy acid stuff but it didn't really work. From birth as well, she also had digestive issues and wouldn't poop for days and days and then scream and bleed from a bowel movement when she would have one. Doc said she was fine and would out grow it soon. Um, yah. She's 2 1/2 yrs old now and she just barely outgrew that. It's been awful. I hope you find something that helps. We tried soy, we tried lactose sensitive, etc. Nothing really worked to end it until she was a yr and went on cow's milk. Even then, we had to give her 2%. Maybe you can try goats milk. I was referred to that several times and heard you can get it at grocery stores or Walmart. Our's didn't have it so I don't know if it would have worked for us. Good luck mama!

Thank you guys so much. I am ready to see her not so sad anymore. Yeah if they recommend rice that is going to be a big hell no. I am not feeding my 2 week old possibly arsenic tainted rice. I wonder if DD #1 had silent reflux, because at two weeks she started screaming for hours and hours a day every day. It was so hard, months and months of just soothing her.

My doctor acually recomended oatmeal instead because rice is harsh
