I packed it after my water broke, lol. You may want to bring some nursing pads, but the hospital should provide a pump if you need it and lanolin cream.

If you plan on breastfeeding then I would bring a boppy pillow. I packed the night before but I was a scheduled c section. Make sure you have all your bathroom things like shampoo and toothbrush. Pack a good book and night gown. Socks and slippers

I packed it at 35 weeks.

If you're going to breastfeed, bring a boppy pillow, lanolin, nursing bras, & nursing pads. People will tell you that you don't need nursing pads because your milk won't come in while you're in the hospital but mine did and I left the hospital with engorged breasts. I was very happy that I had brought the nursing pads lol. Oh, and my baby had a super strong suck from the start & ALWAYS wanted to nurse so I had cracked nipples from day one & the lanolin was a lifesaver.

But yeah other than that, you're going to want some of your own underwear (some loose, ugly ones that you don't care about), some of your own maxi pads (my hospital had two options- big diaper & smaller, scented diaper), one of your own nightgowns (I got tired of wearing the hospital gown & felt MUCH better once I was out of it & in my own clothes), some toiletries (because a shower will make a world of difference & if you get a c-section a shower helps with removing the dressing on your incision), and some things for your baby (I used a few outfits as well as my own receiving blankets).

I usually packed when I had around 3 weeks till due. What you need can vary alot in what your particular hospital will provide. Sometimes it helps to talk to someone that delivered where you will. It also depends on what you personally want with you. Here is what I take:

Pj's or other lounge type where. Something you don't mind visitors seeing you in. Something that makes you comfortable (you will basically still be pregnant sized!). Something you can breastfeed in. Now sometimes I used my pjs i brought and sometimes I didn't. Sometimes I was so sore it was so hard to get out of bed to go to the bathroom and change pads etc that I was guaranteed to leak some....so just wearing the hospital gowns was easy...you can change them whenever you need and not have to worry about laundry, staining etc. Sometimes I was able to move better and found wearing clothes more comfortable and i felt more presentable for visitors etc. You may decide to wear a gown the first day when bleeding is real bad and you are pretty worn etc. Then your clothes the other. My feet are cold. I bring plenty of socks!

Although they may supply it I like my own bathroom stuff. Toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner bodywash etc. I actually purchased a special set of bath/body items for my hospital bag that would make me feel pampered a bit (I normally don't really fuss over special bath type products and used simple whatever stuff). It was nice to smell extra nice and feel refreshed. I can't stand not to shave everyday so I brought a razor. deoderant...contact care stuff (and your glasses) if you need that stuff. I bring makeup. To me spending 3 minutes applying a little basic makeup made me feel so much more human and camera ready should you have visitors etc. Hair ties or srunchies or some sort of clip if you have long hair. Hair comb.

Your go home outfit...remember you will pretty much be pretty pregnant looking. I usually took a maternity outfit to wear. I did take a stretchy type pants and big shirt a couple times. that worked fine too.

Now in every hospital i have dellivered in they provide these mess like underwear for you to wear and I personal loved it. No need to worry about leaks and laundry with my own. I did wear my own home. I totally needed those huge diaper like pads they give you in the hospital. Anything else would have been a joke so I never brought my own. Yeah I wore them home too and took all I had left to wear at home!

Plan on being up all night or near to it! I always brought snacks with me. It really helped pass the hours unending nursing a fussing baby in the middle of the night. Plus I never really had many if any visitors so no one was there to get me anything i wanted during the days.

I also bring my laptop, make sure I have phone numbers or other contact info to get ahold of poeple once baby is born. A cell phone is easier than using the hospital phone. CAMERA!! make sure you have memory on it batteries, charging cord whatever.

If you are wanting anything for labor pack it. Music, tennis ball or some other message type tool, lip balm etc. I never really used anything in labor. Don't forget your insurance card or any other info that your hospital might need like living wills etc. Even if you pre register bring things because paperwork is known to somehow get lost in shuffles.

For breastfeeding you may find a nursing pillow (like boppy) very helpful. Everything else I was always provided with at the hospital...those cold gel pack things, nipple cream, pads etc. A lactation consultant is pretty much standard these days so the need for reference books etc for help is not really there.

Baby will need a going home outfit a blanket and whatever else is appropriate for your weather. A carseat of course. Everything else was always provided for me. I always had diapers with plenty to take home. Vaseline. Wipes. nose suction thing. Pacifiers. etc.

Your dr may or may not give you a prescription for a pain med and stool softener. It might be good to have some at home in case you don't get one. Also I was always given Tucks but wanted more at home. Even without hemorrhoids they are great if you have stitches and soreness. Make sure you have a ridiculous amount of pads at home waiting.
