Non stress tests

posted 6th Oct
The closer it gets to Mya's birthday, the more anxious and paranoid I am becoming.

I start NSTs in two weeks. Twice a week. I'm having a hard time believing that they are going to do any good, though.. I mean, can being hooked up to a monitor for what, less than an hour a day, twice a week, really tell if my baby is okay? What exactly do they look for in NSTs? I know he has to make kick count or whatever, but that's it. I just don't understand how they can tell if there is a problem based on such little monitoring.. kwim?

Gah.

They also monitor kid kicking and resting heart rate, which helps determine how hard he's having to work just to hang out in there (can indicate a cord prolapse or pinching/knotting) as well as a few other things.

THe non stress test can monitor baby's movement and heart rate. For the baby there has to be two good spikes. If I remember correctly what the doctor told me. I got them quit often and ended up at the hospital for further monitoring because she wasn't moving much.

That's comforting to know. So if his cord was all kinked up like Mya's, they'd hopefully be able to detect it.. right? It was fine at the 28 week ultrasound - floating by his face, but not wrapped and the blood flow was good. Big relief there. For a minute. Hah.

Good spikes as in.. their heart rate going up?

i feel the same way. I get two a week. They take your bp and they look at how the baby's heart rate reacts with his own movement and contractions that you may be having. It measures resting heart rate and makes sure that he can bounce back from a dip or spike.

Ive been getting nst done since 30 weeks because I have a high risk pregnancy. They look for ur babys heart rate to increase when u feel it move. Make sure u eat good and drink plenty of water before u go in.

Do they monitor you for a set amount of time (20 min, an hour, etc?) or do they just wait until baby has done everything they need.

I believe it's a comibanation of heart rate and movement. If those aren't good then baby isn't moving around like they want. It's been awhile since I had one and I'm trying to remember how the doctor explained it.

Yup. It can give them an indication if there is a hidden cord issue like with Mya. So take comfort---at least for a little while

Its like an average of 20mins. But they wont hesitate to keep you a little longer If he starts moving or if the heart rate goes up or down just to make sure it will work out. It can get as low as 110and as high as about 165as long as he can bounce back to where he is supposed to be. If they keep you a little longer, it doesnt mean anything is wrong though. Its just a double check. They also wont let you leave if they suspect any issues. Try not to worry.

You seriously just lifted a big weight off of my shoulders. My doctors really suck at explaining smurf ahead of time & I've been majorly stressing today.
