I'm just saying when people get all up in arms about other people's kids' names its kind of petty. Especially since there are so many kids with names that are somewhat strange. My community is heavily Armenian and I don't have a clue how to pronounce many of their names- etc. The country as a whole isn't a Jack, Suzy, Jennifer, Scott country so much anymore and I speculate that by the time our kids are out in the work force seeing a name like LaFi'fi or whatever won't be something many people think twice about. That said I did see the name "Roobenhood" at my dentists office the other day and did have a giggle.

And I'm pretty sure Blanket can A) afford to change his name B) go through life without being too worried about getting a job. Ha ha.

I know what you're saying, though.

Ethnic names are not trendy, though, thats a completely different discussion.

Trendy names are the ones that came out of no where, have 35 different spellings and sound incredibly juvenile and won't age well - and are often used on the wrong gender.

As for the name in the OP: Bailey is awful for a number of reasons including it's many different "spellings", the fact that it's a surname being used for a girl, but also for the fact that it means "bailiff"....no attractive.

I don't think it's so different. A weird name is a weird name, personally when I meet someone with a strange name I don't immediately google it to see if its a "legitimate" name or not. Trends change, times change. I do think people should think long and hard about the names they choose- but at the end of the day someone falling in love with the name Bailey- Or Bailee or whatever it is- is not a big deal.

Who cares if it means bailiff? Maybe she'll get into law enforcement. My kid's name means by the Holly tree or something lame.

Meh.

Of course there is a HUGE difference between trendy names and Ethnic names - wow. America is a melting pot of cultures, we are surrounded by culture and people of different ethnicity everywhere we turn. I don't find ethnic names "weird" I find most of them strong, beautiful, cultural names. Bailey is tacky trash in comparison - there isn't any culture or background there and it's quite obviously NOT ethnic, it sounds juvenile and childish and will look incredibly stupid on an adult.

I agree.

There is a big difference of a "different" name and a name that is just "cutesy."

Exactly! My son has a Param (his family is middle eastern) and a Mackinzie in his class. There is an obvious difference in the type of name and I'm pretty positive we can all figure out who has a leg up in the work force here.

I honestly don't get what's wrong with Mackenzie? It's not some made up, misspelled name. It's decently common in the current and past generation. The "E" sound generally sounds cutesy, but idk, my grandmother has 3 friends in their late 70s-early 80s with the name Emily. *shrugs*
Maybe it's a regional thing.

It wasn't Mackenzie - it was Mackinzie - kinzee is what they call her. While I don't really care for Mackenzie, it has few "cutesy" sounds in it than Mackinzie does. The whole "in-zee" sound just does not sound adult or mature AT ALL.

I feel the same way about the ay-lee sounding names. Kaylie, Haylie, Bailey, Jailee, Rayleigh (yes, I've seen that) - they just sound so cutesy and juvenile.

Maybe I'm not being clear enough. *I* recognize the difference, but I think generally speaking, a weird name is a weird name. Please don't get condescending with this "wow" business. I appreciate a nice ethnic name as well, my son is a Laszlo. I have had many people ask me if I made it up.

My point is just that with the naming trends being the way they are now, by the time our kids are in the workforce, some of these names ( halee, balee, kaylee, etc) will be the new Jessicas and Jennifers. It's not my style, but it is a huge trend- and the new mainstream.

And you live in California? That is shocking that people are still clueless on 'ethnic' names! I'd expect that in....Louisiana. Or Kentucky, but not some place diverse like California.

I think a majority of people can tell the difference between an ethnic name and something trendy.

Yes, they may become the "main stream", but that doesn't mean they don't sound ridiculously stupid, childish and unprofessional.
