Burping baby

posted 6th Oct
Quick question...does my baby need to burp after every feeding? She is 6 weeks old and whenever I feed her I try to burp her half way through and then again when she is finished. However, sometimes she just won't burp. I'll be sitting there for a good 10 minutes patting her back and nothing, and then other times I'll just give her 2 good pats and she'll let out a nice big burp. I feel bad cause sometimes I just can't get her to, but she never seems to be uncomfortable or upset...so I don't know. When she won't burp, should I just keep trying until she does, or could it be that she just doesn't need to?

TIA, this is my first child so I'm new to all of this.

Note: She's bottle fed

I would always at least try, but if she doesn't burp after a while I wouldn't worry about it.

Someone once told me that if a baby doesnt burp after 2 minutes, they probably don't have to.

Alright, that makes sense. I just wasn't sure if I should keep trying after sitting there for 5-10 minutes with no burp haha. Thank you

My son usually burps right away, if not I'd only maybe wait a couple minutes before finishing to feed him and trying to burp again. Sometimes he won't at all but will get fussy after I put him down and he's been chilling for 10-15 minutes. He'll fuss and I know he needs a burp and thats when he spits up a little.
Has your LO been really fussy and gassy? If not I wouldn't worry too much about her not burping every time.

I'd do it for around 5-10 minutes if not just don't worry about it. But the whole two minutes thing isn't true. Sometimes it'd take my son like 5 or so minutes but then he'd let out a huge burp. But yeah after awhile I would just give up.

Try different positions too.
Put him over your shoulder, then sit him on your lap and pat his back, or lay him down and sit him up a few times to get the bubble moving. Sometimes after I try everything he wont burp...then I lay him down to change his diaper, and when I pick him up is when he'll burp really loud. I give up after 2 minutes, and my LO is still alive and well ;)

No, when she doesn't burp she doesn't get gassy or fussy at all, that's why I was wondering if it was possible that she just didn't need to. I always try to burp her at least twice when she's being fed, and she'll usually burp right away, it's just sometimes she won't and I'm thinking it's just because she doesn't need to.

Oh ok, I never give up after just 2 minutes anyway haha. I'll always try for at least 5 minutes.

Yeah I try different positions...the only one that seems to work is when she's on my lap though. My daughter does that too, she won't burp during her feeding then like a half hour later I'll pick her up and she'll let out a nice big one haha. I wasn't too worried about it, I just wasn't sure if it was really necessary to keep trying after like 10 minutes haha

I call my son the self burping baby. LOL I will try burping him for what seemed like forever but he will be crawling around or playing and just burp on his own. I'm sure it's not going to kill the baby, if she has to burp she will let you know after you have tried. Her tummy will hurt.

I'm just worried about her tummy being upset, but it hasn't happened yet to my knowledge. She burps on her own a lot of the time too, like a half hour after she's done eating. Thank you
