Has anyone ever thought about this??

I just did the math on something...and it really bugged me.
I'll share:
Say you buy a brand new car and pay $25,000.00. Let's just use 8% as the tax, since taxes vary by state.
Okay so, $25,000.00 × 8%= $2,000.00
Two years later, you decide to sell the car. You sell it for $10,000.00.
$10,000.00 × 8%= $800
Then, a few years later, the car gets sold for $4,000.00
$4,000.00 × 8%= $320.
Okay, so the car gets sold 3 times over it's "lifetime", bringing in a total of $3,120 in sales tax.
If you take the original price of the car ($25,000.00) and take into account all of the tax that has been paid each time it's sold (a total of $3,120.00), the taxes paid on the vehicle would be approx. 12%-13%.
So, my question is, how do you feel about that? Do you feel that, in light of what I just laid out, the amount of tax paid for the vehicle is fair? Should the government be able to tax used goods when full tax was paid when it was newly purchased?
I'm curious if anyone else has pondered this, or even realized it was happening.

Right. The buyer(s) are.
Doesn't negate the fact that the car is being triple taxed.

We are also taxed on that same vehicle with yearly registration fees.
But that isn't the only way we get screwed tax wise. They are always coming up with new ways to tax us.

don't forget the personal property taxes that whoever owns the car will have to pay on it every year forever. You seriously never really own anything in this life. Your house, your land, your cars, nothing, because if you don't pay your taxes on them every year the government will take them.

Oh yeah! That's right! Because the fee is based on the value of the vehicle, right?

That is a very good, albeit scary, point.
Ugh. It's depressing.

That depends on what state you live in. Some states are based on the value of the vehicle...those incidentally are tax deductible on your 1040 if you itemize. Others are a flat fee.

Yeah, I'm taking a governmental accounting class this semester, and who would have thought it would be so horrifying? I hate property taxes. I understand why they do them, but I hate them.

I hate them too. Everyone wonders why so many house are in foreclosure...its not just the economy....you would not believe how many house around here go to auction for back taxes. its unreal. Oh, Mr. Smith owes us 10,000 in back taxes, let's sell his 200,000 house to get our money. Screw where him and his kids will live...

I think it is alright b/c each person that purchases has the opportunity to write off the sales tax at the end of the year when they file their taxes.

Yeah, I find it absolutely horrifying that they can do that...even when you completely own the house, have no mortgage on it, therefore it is "yours."
I'm all for people paying their fair share of taxes, what they owe, but damn...we are taxed every which direction.
Businesses have to pay payroll taxes on their employees. They also have to pay income tax (or submit a return and k-1s to pass that to their shareholders or partners). The employees are paying payroll taxes and income taxes. Then there are sales and use taxes. It is crazy. And they are all so complicated. Income tax gets more so every year.
