re: Has anyone ever thought about this??

That is only if they itemize, and not everyone does. Also, most people take state taxes paid if they do itemize, rather than sales taxes paid. Ends up being the higher number for most people.

It is also not a dollar for dollar reduction of tax liability, just reduces AGI..

Yea, I've always listed that seperately anytime I purchase a new car. The taxes are substantial and have their own seperate section. Then I enter in my property taxes, car registrations and sales tax on everyday purchases.
We don't have state income taxes in FL.

Ah, that's why you do it, no state income tax. I do taxes in Utah. We can list real estate tax. I believe that Utah is going to a flat fee if they haven't already, so we won't be able to deduct that anymore for 2012 taxes if they have already. We do have a state income tax, so I honestly don't think I've seen a case yet where sales tax was taken instead of state income tax.

I cannot imagine doing it any other way! Our food here is hella expensive, and any food purchased from the grocery store isn't taxed. Non-food items are taxed, though.

I live in Oregon so we have no sales tax, woot woot!

I'm not a fan of double taxation in any area. It would seem that the green movement would be especially against double taxation of used goods because it helps the environment when people buy used products instead of wasting resources for a new product and throwing the old product in the garbage.

You are in real estate. Is there a transfer tax in CA? Here we pay 1% each time a property is sold. It adds up!

It varies county to county or city to city, but here is an example:

A Santa Monica beach property is sold for $2,000,000. The Documentary Transfer Tax payable to the Los Angeles County is $2,200 ($2,000,000/$1,000 x $1.10), and the Documentary Transfer Tax payable to the City of Santa Monica is $6,000 ($2,000,000/$1,000 x $3.00). Total Documentary Transfer Tax is $8,200 ($2,200 + $6,000).

Another great point, Nuge!

try this on for size: in nyc, closing costs are 3% of the purchase price
yep, $15,000 on a $500k house

which, you'd think, was a nice house, but it's not at all. it's like a one-bedroom

and think about what happens if, god forbid, you get an dividends on your stocks....

say, you work for a corporation
corporation pays tax
your salary: you pay payroll and income taxes
you invest and get dividends: you pay taxes on that
that's like a third round of tax! and they talk about "fair share"
what would be fair? cause half my income is gone on taxes. so, what's "fair"? 2/3rds? 3 quarters?
and where does it go? solyndra? to sponsor political pet projects. bastards!
