You can put baby vicks on him, that should help loosen him up. Avoid milk products, they will just make the mucous worse. It sounds like a cold, which he would have gotten regardless of whether or not you vaccinated him for the flu. He already had it. He just wasn't symptomatic yet.

Flu is characterized by exhaustion, intense body aches, fever, and no mucous production. So you know this isn't that.
