Breastfeeding Advice Needed Please!

posted 5th Oct
When I found out I was pregnant I was determined to breastfeed! I told myself no excuses! If my Mother and Grandmother did it so can I. When my daughter who is now 16 months old was born I soon found out it was easier said then done. It took me a whole 10 weeks to get the hang of it. I was pumping and feeding her formula because my nipples were cracked so bad they would bleed. Now my daughter wont eat ANYTHING else. She doesn't like regular milk, or food! I don't understand why, food is AMAZING. I have tried giving her different types of food. It doesn't really bother me now because I am a stay at home Mom so she can eat when ever. I was planning on weening her around 18 months. Today I took her to the Dr because she has been throwing up.  Turns out she has the stomach flu! When the Dr asked what I was feeding her I let him know she was mostly breastfed. She will occasionally eat grapes and cheese. She had both last night so I thought maybe that upset her stomach. Anyway the Dr told me she was a big girl now and it's time to start cutting her off.  Selfishly I don't want to! I love the closeness between us! I guess I am afraid that once I stop she wont be as big of a Mommy's girl as she is now? Is that super wrong of me? I mean she is growing up soooo fast! I feel like I just had her yesterday, and now she walking, running, trying to talk, and in the middle of potty training! Where did the time go. If i stop breastfeeding I feel like it's me admitting she's not a baby anymore! I might as well start putting in College Applications.  I know I am a weenie! Has anyone else been in the same boat and if so how did you handle this situation?

Your doctor is an idiot. There is absolutely nothing better for her while she is sick than bf. I'd find a new doctor.

It's not selfish. A lot of kids won't eat solid food at that age. I have worked with them myself. I used to nanny for a 2 year old who was just starting to eat solids. It's totally fine, don't let a dr make you question yourself. You're doing right by your child. She's got her whole life to eat other things. She only has a short amount of time to breastfeed. Enjoy it. You're not a weenie at all, you're a good mom.

He told me to continue to feed her this week while she's sick but after that to start weening.

I would smile and nod and say sure, uh huh, and then walk out and find a new doctor. and keep breastfeeding as long as she wants.

If you don't want to stop don't! It's amazing you are still breastfeeding at 16 months, she will stop when she is ready to.

Sure, she needs to eat some solids at 16 mths but... Ask him to name one food that is healthier than breastmilk. He can't because there is not a food in the world that is better.

She doesn't need to be weaned yet! That doctor is dumb, breast milk is the only source of food she really needs til 2 years.  Let her decide when to start foods.

Thanks. That makes me feel A LOT better. I am the only one who believes I should continue. My family, friends, Dr, and Spouse also want to to stop.

Your doctor seems like he's sticking his nose where it doesn't belong. It's never time to start "cutting them off" until you or your child doesn't want to anymore.

Good! You shouldn't doubt yourself!! I'm lucky, my man is very supportive (luke is almost 3 and just started nursing like crazy after his sister was born) but his mom and family are very expressive about how they think it's inappropriate that I tandem nurse (not even in front of them or anything) and that it's weird. I'm just glad he told her to shut up because she was being dumb.

breastfeed that baby as long as she and you want.
i would keep offering her a variety of foods...maybe just small amounts at a time if that's what she wants.

but like someone else said, there is no need to wean....it is still very good for her.

Thanks everyone! I feel much better now. I will try and introduce more food! I bought her Mickey Mouse shaped chicken nuggets lol. Hopefully that will help out a little.
