Problems with kindergarten

posted 5th Oct
My son turned 5 in July and started school at the end of August. I thought he was doing OK, I was even speaking to his teacher most days after school to ensure he was doing well, she never voiced any concerns, in fact she would tell me that he was doing well and was a joy to have in the class (I'm not sure if that's just normal teacher protocall though). I got a call today from his principal because he has problems following simple instruction like putting on his shoes (which I have always mhad a problem with at home too) or when asked to come to the front with his folder when his name is called he will just come up. He had a hearing test done at school yesterday and couldn't even finish it, but I've never noticed hearing problems, per se, I have noticed him not focusing when I ask him something but as soon as I have his explicit attention it is easy to make him understand what I want him to do. Has anyone else gone through this? I'm only asking because I wont be able to get in and see his teacher until next week. He is a very observant child and loves shapes and numbers.

He could listen better when you have his attention because he's looking at you and reading lips---which can be harder at school when he's distracted looking at other things.

I just dont understand why he would be able to hear the first part of instruction but not the last part, you know? I was looking up this thing called auditory processing disorder but only a few of the "signs" are like his and some the signs can be seen in most of the children I've been around...Gah! I hate this, I wish they would've waited until monday to call since I cant even speak to anyone until then anyways!

It could be hearing, add, or developmental. It's still normal for 5 yr olds to be slightly impulsive and do stuff before they're asked. While its more common in 3-4 yr olds it is still somewhat normal. But it is something to check out cause he should be used to the routine by now. He probably was doing fine at the beginning of the yr cause all the kids are getting used to routine. But by now he really should have it down.
