Potty learning (poop issues)

posted 5th Oct
K, so Chris is a few months away from 3yrs so we're working on potty learning. He's been in undies for two days now with only two pee accidents. He's doing wonderful, but poop on the other hand, I feel like we'll never get there. He's asking me for a diaper before he poops. Both times I've ran him to the potty and sat him on it in hopes he'd poop in his potty. I tried telling him he could have a new Hot Wheel, candy, or sticker of his choice and I've also tried giving him a couple books to read. I feel like I am at a rut. Of course I put the diaper on him to poop because I don't want him holding it and his tummy hurting. Ideas or help? Thoughts? TIA for any and all advice.

I could try that....maybe he'd get the feel for pooping in that position (which is what I think it is)...

My step daughter was like this. she would hold it until bedtime when we'd put a pull up on her. We just started making her run around naked or just with panties on. She pooped her panties a couple times, but it finally caught on that she was only to go poop on the potty. I think it also helped bcuz my daughter was PT'ing at the same time and they would kinda compete...lol

good luck!

How long do you wait before you put the diaper on? Catch him in the act..there will be a point where he can't hold it in anymore and he'll have to poop in his underwear, at that moment, sit him on the potty in the middle of his poop. Then, praise the heck out of him and give him a reward.

I make him sit on potty for 10 minutes before putting a diaper on him. I will try waiting until he can't hold it anymore.

My son did the same thing at the same age. But he wouldn't ask for a diaper. He just held it in and wouldn't go. It got to the point we had to give him laxatives and make him sit on the toilet until he went. The bribing didn't work...he would always tell us he can't do it. Once he did go you could tell it was constipation poop and he didn't want to do it because it hurt. But I know if they hold it in when they have the urge their muscles get tight and then causes problems when they actually do go. It can cause a mass and then go up to the colons and destroy that area. We went to laxative because I didn't want to risk that happening.

It took Ryan 2 months after being pee potty trained to go to the potty and poop. He knew he needed to use the potty to poop but he used to have issues pooping so I think that's why he wouldn't do it. H would just poop in the floor though so I had to just start watching him and making him sit on the potty.

He would run in another room to poop so I'd follow him and tell him he had to go get on the potty to poop (he had the option of the big potty or his little potty) and I wouldn't leave him alone until he pooped (he doesn't like for you to be in the same room when he poops) I'd stand outside the door or leave him alone but I'd keep checking on him to make sure he was still on there. The thing that worked was doing that and catching him doing it and he couldn't hold it any longer and he just had to go right then so he pooped on the potty b/c I sat him there but then I just praised him like nobody's business and it got better after that it only took like 2 or 3 days of watching him real close and now he just goes all by himself. The first couple days (before I got him to actually go on the potty) were rough b/c he just threw a fit and cried but then I got him to go once and it was all down hill from there.

Sounds like catching him in action is what everyone is telling me to do. Thanks for the helpful advice. Of course, I'll be back on here to update once he's done it because I'll be super happy :-D

Also if he has trouble going or seems like he gets constipated try fiber gummies. I had to use them with Ryan for a while and now I don't have to at all but for a few months he needed them and that helped too

Good luck!
