Discipline at 16 Months

posted 5th Oct
My 16 month old has recently started with the temper tantrums, pinching, and basically not listening at all. The worst right now are diaper changes which result in a tantrum 10 times a day (she will scream and fight me everytime).

How do you disipline your 16 month old? "No" means nothing to her now and is a que for her to throw herself on the floor crying and screaming whenever I say it.

For those that do time-outs at this age where do you put them? I don't want to associate her crib with punishment but I know she would not stay put anywhere else. Help!

She won't properly understand a time-out yet. Redirect and remove her from the situation.

That's what I figured. I have been doing redirection.

I know it's difficult, believe me. Diaper changes here are a pain as well. Just keep up with the redirection.

Do you have a pack n play? That was what we used for "ultimate" redirection meaning, we tried several times to get his attention elsewhere. Anyway, there were toys in there so it's not like it was punishment, it just helped calm him down and be like "oh, something shiny"

Diaper changes? My Son didn't start fighting me until he was 2. I just WWF'd through it the best I could   So I have no advice there.

The diaper changes are the most difficult thing for me right now! We normally power through changing them while shes standing up, running, etc. but when there is a poo diaper things get real! I get vey serious when it comes to poo contamination...LOL! But I am trying so hard not to lose my cool.

There were times it took both me and my Husband to change my Son's diaper   We would seriously have to use force. It makes zero sense but I mean, you have to change them   If by yourself get in the floor, put her legs up and put your leg over her legs so you can wipe her. Then move her legs down, put your leg over her stomach while you put the diaper back on. Pull up's are good too if you can't get her still to fasten the diaper.

I'm going through this too and I know what you mean about poopy diapers. I just try and keep a few small toys or something that she only gets to have while I clean her up. It usually results in a tantrum afterwards when I have to take it away, but she's clean and turd isn't all over the place ;)

I got a lot of distractions for my Son too. That does sometimes help.
