Naming your child after a place.

posted 5th Oct
What's your opinion on people who name their kids after places?
in example; Paris, Dallas, Charlotte, Austin, Alexandria, London, Chandler, Jackson

What do you think of the name Alaska?
original spelling is Alyeska (Aleut spelling)
It can be pronounced ally-esk-uh or alaska.

Meh. I named my daughter Charlotte but after her great grandmother. Not the city

I just realized that was a city.

I dont too much mind the other ones maybe its because Im more use to them IDK. But I dont like Alaska or Alyeska, I know that may be the original spelling but in this day and age with names like Ahllie *supposed to be Ally* someone will probably think you just cant spell worth crap.

I love London as well as Alexandria.

I don't really like Alaska at all, and most of that stems from the fact it won't be pronounced properly. It WILL be pronounced like the state.

My eldest daughters name is Sydney, But it wasn't after the place, It was after a Horror movie character (Sidney, from Scream) But even if people choose to name them specifically for the place itself, So long as it isn't something ridiculous (Moscow, Tokyo lol) I don't see a problem with it.

I don't mind them. If you think about it those city's were most likely once named after a person anyways lol

Eh, I wouldn't name my child a place name that doesn't have meaning, like Bronx or Ireland.
Names like Alexandria, Aurora or Montgomery all have meanings that have nothing to do with the place that they share a name with. Both my children have place names, but they were names long before they were known as a name of a city.

Some of the places that you mentioned were named after people so they started out as a person's name and therefore they are just regular names. Charlotte, for example was a person's name long before the town of Charlotte, NC existed.

As for calling someone after a place that is clearly a place I think that it can work SOMETIMES. It is all about context. If the mom or dad has a personal relationship to a place then choosing to name thier child after that place can be a meaningful choice.

For example, say you grew up in Brooklyn and the community meant a lot to you, you have a lot of friends and family there, and great memories but you live in another state now. To honour your hometown you name your kid Brooklyn and I think that is really sweet because of your memories & connection to the place your kid's name will have meaning and tell as story of where their family is from. Now, if you have never been to Brooklyn and you just think it sounds cute then it would be totally stupid and ridiculous to name your child Brooklyn.

Also, say you travelled to India for a few months and had an amazing experience there that left an impression on you. You fell in love with the people, the food, the culture and you will never forget your magical time there. If you named your kid India in honour or this place where you had an amazing experience and you feel that it has some special meaining to you then I think it is a great name choice. If you have never been there, and you just like the sound of an "exotic" name so you name your kid India then it is stupid and silly.
