Feeding my 1 year old
posted 4th Oct
Okay so my son is 1 year old.....and he acts like he is starving.....I wake up and make him breakfast (usually 1 egg, banana, whole milk.) he eats that til he acts like he is full (shakes his head no and turns away and doesnt want the spoon to his mouth and tries to get out of his high chair) then i eat breakfast about the same thing he eats but just a tad bit more and he screams and cries and i feed him off my plate too....then for lunch he will eat one of those small chef boyardee spagettios and meatballs and some type of fruit have a cuppy with half juice and half water. then i usually eat something and he wants what i have and will eat alot of it....and then dinner, whatever is cooked (steaks, or chicken, or spaghetti.....vegitables....rice...ect.) and of course its blended, or in small pieces so its not a choking hazard. But i feel like when i feed him his food even after he has ate until he seems like he is full and starts getting irritable cause i try to give him more to make sure he is done....it seems like if i get something he wants it and acts like he is starving and i feed him from my plate too....am I wrong for doing that or do you think he is just acting like a normal one year old wanting to eat everything lol.....Idk he is 24lbs and the dr told me he is not over weight but his weight keeps going up and that could become unhealthy if he keeps gaining weight the way he is. I would like some advice or any expierciences you ladies have had. thank you

It's normal. My LO does the same thing, they're curious as to what you have. ;)

He's a growing boy so I say let him eat. He's only 1. Kids are active, they burn a lot of calories anyway. Is he gaining weight at a rapid pace? How active is he?

He's growing! On top of those three meals, he should be having healthy snacks. When he's hungry, feed him! & get used to it because boys appetites never slow down! lol

My one year old does the same thing. Babies and toddlers will not over eat, they know when they are hungry.
What I do for my daughter is we both eat meals together and about 45 minutes to an hour after a meal I set out a snack that she can reach and easily eat with minimal mess (diced fruit, veggie sticks, peices of cubed cheese, crackers, dry cereal, etc) along with her cup of water (we don't do juice...I think it fills her up more than just plain water). So she can feel free to snack as she pleases while she plays.
If I don't set out her snacks, she lets me know. She will go into the kitchen, knock on the fridge or the pantry door, come back to me and sign "eat more please" until I let her find a snack lol.

Thanks.....and he is very active....always walking and playing and all squirmy when you hold him lol...and the last time he had a check up before he was 1 was when he was 9 months.....he weighed about 20lbs and now at 1 year he is 24lbs....but she said that everytime he has had an appointment he has gained 3-4 lbs and if it keeps happening like that it could cause him to be over weight, but i dont think he is over weight one bit...he is tall and slender lol...he is 31 inches long and he looks healthy to me. not overweight and deff. not underweight. of course I will not deny him food....if he wants to eat he WILL eat....and Im scared the doctor is right though about me feeding him everytime he wants something......that he may become overweight.

Weight gain starts to slow down around this time because of how active they become. I wouldn't worry about it right now. He could very well be having a growth spurt right now also. My kids are monsters during growth spurts.

have you tried making only meals that he can feed himself. my daugthers 14months and likes to feed herself plus it gives me a chance to eat too so then im not stuck eating when she is done and trying to eat my food. and she can eat as much or as little as she wants

My daughter seems to eat more snack foods than meals. Lol I posted a thread about it a few days ago, you can look through my topics to find it if you want some more responses.
And my LO is 14 months and about the same size as your son. I wouldn't worry, I'm sure he is healthy

Yea I make food he can feed himself but he ends up throwing over his high chair and at me lol so its easier to feed him myself. Thank you girls for all your replies, its mades me at ease with how I feed my son. He loves to eat and I am not gonna change the way or how much he wants to eat....now if his weight got outta control and unhealthy then it will change but he is fine and I see that so clearly now

I always fed my boys whenever they were hungry at that age....I still do for the most part. Growing boys makes for big appetites! I wouldn't worry about the weight gain either.

My kids are the same way. I finally started eating at the same time as the boys, that way we get done eating at the same time; They're full, I'm full, and they aren't curious as to what I'm eating that he isn't!

I wouldn' worry. My 16 month old daughter is very curious about food right now. She wants what I have whether she is hungry or not. She is 23 pounds and eats 3 meals (protien, grain, fruit & veg) plus 2 snacks a day and will still want a bite if she sees me eating.
