if you BREASTFED over ONE YEAR...

posted 4th Oct
If you breastfed OVER 1 year, how did you start to wean them? Even if you didnt FULLY stop, but go to once or twice a day?

i.e, they won't accept a binky, or bottle (which would defeat the purpose anyway) and we are not a CIO family.

My son is 11 months right now and I'm going to be starting the weaning process in a couple of weeks. There's no reason to introduce a bottle at this point. It's easier to go straight to sippy cups. Right now I'm working on getting him use to drinking out of the sippy cup. I give it to him during mealtimes when he's watching everyone else drink. Today he drank maybe 1/3 of his first glass of milk (he'll be 1 nov 1st) because he saw his brothers doing it. Eventually i'll be replacing one sippy cup of milk with a feeding. So ...after his morning nap for example, i'll give him a cup of milk and not do the boob. After we both get use to it and my boobs stop feeling like they're on fire, I'll replace a second feeding that way and so on and so forth.

I haven't made any attempt to wean her, and she's not showing signs of self weaning yet. She will be 2 in December.

my first one weaned herself at 18 months because i went back to school. my second weaned herself at 11 months because i started working (that was not my intentions) then my 3rd weaned himself at 16 months because i was pregnant and my milk changed. and my 4th is about tto be two next month and still refuses to wean. he LOVES the boob.

At 1 he was still realy attached. At 2 I cut him down to one night feeding and one early morning feeding. I just told him "No, not right now. Later ok? Let's go play with your truck!" etc. Distraction lol

I was hoping he would wean himself, but nope. I can't distract him, bribe him, or beg him, lol. He is obsessed with breastfeeding. My daughter was much easier. At about 12 months I just stopped, and she didn't even care. It's crazy how kids are so different, lol.

I started with don't offer, don't refuse. Eventually we night weaned once he was able to understand that the sun came up in the morning, and he couldn't nurse until then. Every then weaned himself.
