When does "overweight" mean "unhealthy"?

It's in the name. Extra weight is always unhealthy.

No one is perfect. an extra 10-15lbs isn't all that bad.

Once you get to 50lbs or so over, it's a problem.

Only when you notice it affecting your health.

Health and weight aren't comparable IMO.

Is 10lb over as bad as 50lb? Is 50lb over as bad as 100lb? Give me your opinions!

This applies to non-pregnancy weight.

Even people at their ideal weight can be considered unhealthy, depending on their lifestyle choices.

But in generally terms, once you are over your ideal BMI (which takes into consideration height), then you are at an increased risk for health problems....so imo, would be considered unhealthy.

I would say over weight is over weight, but I don't think being 10lbs overweight is as bad as 50lbs. 50lbs weighs differently on your bones and joints than 10lbs. I also don't think that they should have a strict guideline for what is over weight, because at 150 I would be overweight for my height but at average weight I look sick.

More weight is always worse because that fat is around you organs as well as your waist line.

It's always unhealthy to be overweight, but i don't think being 10 lbs and being 50 lbs is the same level of unhealthiness if that makes sense. Sort of like someone who occasionally drinks, and alcoholic. They both will do damage, but an alcoholics damage should be much worse than an occasional drinker, i would think? i'm no doctor.

I say only when it causes other health issues. Like I'm overweight but it doesn't effect my health and hasn't. I get yearly check ups too though so my doctor and I have a plan as to my goals for loosing weight.

I think there is a difference on how you carry your weight. I know if you are fat with weight on your ass, like myself it is healthier than being fat in the middle. Because when you have extra chub on your tum it applies more weight to your internal organs. Although I'm pretty sure that's probably true for only maybe 30-50 lbs over weight. After that I'm fairly certain it's y unhealthy for anyone period. With the exception of being fat and fit rather than fat and sedentary.

I think they CAN correlate, but can't be directly attributed.

Meaning, two people, one at an ideal weight and one over weight can be vastly different in their health having nothign to do with the weight. I watched somethign on TV. It has a "normal" weight woman and then an "overweight" woman. They put both on the treadmill, and because the overweight woman worked out her cardiovascular health was WAY better. Also, pretty sure her lipid panel was way better too. The ideal weight girl was at a good weight, but she didn't ever work out and possibly didn't eat good food (not sure bout that).

My point is that I think lifestyle factors are WAY more important then strictly weight in determining health. If you run lipid panels and things and find problems, then they are unhealthy. If they are eating crap and not exercising, they are not living a healthy lifestyle (no matter their weight).

True, doing those things will cause weight loss in most people, but then weight is a symptom for them. They aren't unhealthy BECAUSE they're fat, they are unhealthy due to a sedentary lifestyle.

Body fat in excess is unhealthy. This is me after a lifestyle and I am still very unhealthy due to excess body fat. (The one on the right is current)

It isn't good on your body. HOWEVER, I know several people who have lived very healthy lifestyles for a very long time who still carry a lot of extra fat due to health or other factors beyond their control that simply living a healthy lifestyle cannot fix.

Not trying to be a smartass...but it becomes unhealthy when it affects your health.

According to the BMI index when I was in the Army, I was overweight by over 20 pounds...and yet I could still run my 2 miles for my PT test comfortably, do 30 push ups in the 2 minutes given, and do about 70 sit ups in 2 minutes. I had some muscle weight but not nearly enough to say all that extra weight was muscle. I am still "overweight" and my blood pressure is perfect, I am very healthy aside from the occasional aches you get from having 3 children.

weight and health don't have to be connected. I know people who are "overweight" but jog 3 times a week and are in good health and people who are of a heathly weight who eat processed junk all the time and never exercise and I wouldn't call that healthy. It' also unhealthy to be underweight, we need to stop associating weight and health. We need to forget about weight and focus on our health, eating good food, and exercising our bodies.
