When does "overweight" mean "unhealthy"?

It's in the name. Extra weight is always unhealthy.

No one is perfect. an extra 10-15lbs isn't all that bad.

Once you get to 50lbs or so over, it's a problem.

Only when you notice it affecting your health.

Lol I know right? Between being sick at night and doing home work and working there is no time for sleep .

My MIL died from diabetes and was in no way ever fat or overweight. It didn't run in her family either.

My grandfather drank every day of his life since he turned 20 and never had any liver problems.

My sister has been a smoker since she was 18 and now at nearly 50 still has amazing skin.

My brother's MIL died of of cancer and she was a health nut (and a nut, but that's beside the point).

Family history and your life style doesn't always affect you. Some people are just "lucky" or whatever...

But, your risks of getting lung cancer is raised by smoking. You have a higher risk of liver failure if you drink a lot. You have a higher risk of many, many health problems if you have excess body fat.

Drinking, smoking, excess body fat is not healthy. You cannot say that "you can be obese and healthy at the same time" because you cannot. Until you reduce your body fat you are not healthy. Until you quit smoking you are not healthy. Maybe you haven't had any side effects or health issues but that doesn't mean you are "healthy".

"While many may be incredulous, the largest body of evidence has found that fatness is not a risk factor for heart disease or premature death, even controlling for the effects of smoking. Ancel Keys and colleagues confirmed this nearly half a century ago upon examining 16 prospective studies in seven countries, as well as actual angiographic and autopsy examinations of 23,000 sets of coronary arteries which found no relationship between body fatness and the degree or progression of atherosclerotic build-up. And the most careful studies ever since have continued to support these findings. Dr. Paul Ernsberger, of Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, led a review of nearly 400 studies that was published in the Journal of Obesity and Weight Regulation in 1987 which corroborated these results. “The idea that fat strains the heart has no scientific basis,” he said. “As far as I can tell, the idea comes from diet books, not scientific books. Unfortunately, some doctors read diet books.”"

I don't count myself among the healthy. I only count myself among those who pursue healthy things in hopes of increasing health. I have too many issues. Hypothyroid, a metabolic disorder that prevents me from properly absorbing calcium (which leads to kidney stones... one of which I am currently trying to pass), hormonal imbalance, auto-immune issues that cause severe allergic reactions to certain foods and spikes in blood pressure caused by food sensitivities, a diabolical uterus... That being said, since I've changed my lifestyle perspective and feel a lot better but the weight has only dropped a little. I feel a whole hell of a lot better even though I still have the issues I have.

Which is why I feel health is more directly related to lifestyle than weight.

I tend to trust the community of doctors that have been on my ass to lose weight and medical research that I've done than a blog...

But hey, I've been wrong before.

There is a difference in being healthy and improving your health.

Moving towards a healthy lifestyle will improve your health. I have plenty of physical disabilities and an eating disorder, I'm still overweight though I've lost half of my body weight(literally, I'm half the woman I once was) over the past 9 years. I do not consider myself healthy because I am still overweight.

My doctor doesn't get on me about my weight and never has. I have always been the one to bring it up because I think it is an issue. He said with the family history he still isn't worried about it, but yet he gets on one of my friends about her weight (yes we have the same doctor). He said the fact that I'm working out, do a food journal and always bring the stuff I do to my appts with me makes him not as worried) also my blood work and all that always comes out fine.

I'm not trusting the blog, but the research cited in the blog that is curious to me. I've looked up a lot of the research. I didn't buy the research to read it though, but I've viewed the abstracts and conclusions.

You are working out and improving your lifestyle. Losing body fat comes along with that. Your doctor knows that you are trying to get healthy and there is no reason for him to get on to you. If your friend isn't doing anything about her weight and is just accepting that she is overweight and doesn't care, doctors will get on to her.

My doctor gets on to me because it motivates me when someone yells at me. I'm weird like that. I'd of done well in the military!
