Not for my family.

I don't care what others do as long as they don't beat their kids... Or smack their face.

It isn't something I agree with. I try to keep my hypocritical parenting at a minimum & I just don't see any good in hitting a child.
Other methods take more time, but I'm willing to atleast give my kid that.

We spank our oldest, VERY rarely. I'm not the type to think it's horrible or abusive.
But I say do what works. If you can discipline effectively in other ways, I think it's a better option.

I am 110% against from 0-2 yrs of age. There is no reason to spank a Toddler.

3 and up. To each their own I suppose. I can't lie and say I've never popped my Son on the bum but that was after all other efforts were exhausted and there was no anger or frustration on my part. I quickly learned however that it is essentially ineffective for my Son so we discipline in other ways.

A lot of situations where kids are spanked and it really does make my heart hurt. Things that could be worked out in other ways. I just don't think I'll ever agree with anyone hauling off and smacking their kid without saying or trying to do anything else first.

We dont. I dont agree with it, but I belive every parent has the right to parent thier kids however they want, aside from abuse. In most cases spanking isnt abuse.

All I basically said was how its wired that if you hit an adult you go to jail, you hit a child and its 'a teaching tool' as one woman put it.

I kept getting told that I'm horrible for saying those who spank abuse their kids, I never said that. I never used the word abuse.

Its just crazy to me.

My household is a no violence one, that includes hitting of any kind.

My whole family spanks. The only members of my family that don't believe in spanking or never utilized it at all wound up with kids in jail. Kind of amusing and ironic if you ask me, since if the wrong person misinterprets a swat on the butt as child abuse parents can go to jail. I also spent 5 years as a correctional deputy with a sheriff's department that was headquartered in the 8th most dangerous downtown district in the country (as of a study done a few years back. That could be obsolete by now.) More irony? All the deputies I asked about it grew up with spanking and strict discipline, while all the inmates I asked said their parents wouldn't dare lay a hand on them or in the other extreme were beaten. (I majored in psychology for my masters, so I asked a lot of nosy questions for assignments and projects)

I am a firm believer in spanking. But, it doesn't work on everyone. One of my little sisters could've cared less about getting spanked, but she absolutely hated the idea of time out. Spanking her did as much good as spanking a chair, but if you made her sit in a corner or in a room by herself for a while, she would straighten up like magic. So even though I firmly believe spanking has its place and it's usefulness, it also depends on what the kid responds to.

See, all the 'bad' kids I knew that served jail time were spanked, the ones who never really got in trouble at all were never touched.

I spank..well not right now..cause 2 are older and my yougest is 11 months..I believe in spanking. Not in the face though. I was spanked, husband was spanked, my 2 oldest were spanked..low and behold none of us are viloent!! I will say it does bother me seeing screaming kids in the store throwing a fit and the parent saying "jimmy stop it..now Jimmy thats not being a good boy..Jimmy people are staring..Jimmy now now..Really?? Obviously thats not working!..

If you are going to spank at least respect your child in the process. Doing it in public where others can see is extremely humiliating for a child.

There's also a difference between educating your kid on what they did, and just swatting them at what to them might seem like random. And some of the inmates I talked to thought getting beat across the back, buttocks, and legs with a rubber hose, extension cord, or other random object until welts rose was "getting spanked". Which, in my opinion it is not. I got spanked with a belt, but it was only on my butt, never left anything other than a bit of red that faded within 30 minutes, and was always accompanied by a lecture on what I did and why it was wrong. Just randomly hitting a child doesn't count as discipline because it's not accompanied by education. It was a very, very rare inmate that I met that actually grew up with discipline, and those were all drug users, not offenders that actually caused harm to others or infringed on other people's rights or property.

I didn't get spanked, I got my ass beaten.
I would never discipline my kids the way I was disciplined.

And I agree with not spanking toddlers. I can't imagine that being effective at all, they're BABIES IMO.

And I also agree that every other effort should be made before spanking. Spanking isn't a first resort, IMO. If I spanked every time my kids misbehaved...they'd be getting spanked all day long.
I think alot of times it's lazy. When a parent doesn't want to redirect, or try time out, or talk to their child about their behavior.
