Wisdom Teeth

My husband saw the dentist today and he said he needs his wisdom teeth out. We were looking over the estimate of charges, and the have listed bone grafting for these teeth.

I've know other people to get their wisdom teeth pulled and I've never heard of them doing bone grafting. I looked it up and it says it's generally done for pulling teeth when you'll have an implant.

So if you had your wisdom teeth pulled, did they do a bone graft there?

I have 1 tooth that needs a bone graft. Its almost $1000 just for that one tooth. Because of how it grew in and the fact that i waited so long I have lost a lot of bone where the tooth is. My dentist feels there isnt enough bone to support the tooth next to it so I could loose two teeth instead of just the one.

Had all 4 cut out and no bone graft.
No idea what that is really.

They want to do a bone graft for 5 teeth is my understanding (whats on the paperwork). One is for a tooth he needs pulled that was damaged by a previous dentist. The cap came off and since he didn't have insurance he just never got it fixed so it is in very bad shape. I get that one, because I think they're going to want to do an implant for it. I'm just really surprised they feel he needs a graft for each of his four wisdom teeth.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, he's really unsure about it too. As you said, it gets expensive to add those all up, and neither of us want to pay for something he doesn't need if it's just something they add on to up a price. . .

I guess the graft bone into the spot where the tooth was (or any bone they had to remove). It's really common if you're doing to get a dental implant there, so sort of sure up the area. But it's a LOT of extra money. Like, it's 90% of our bill.

Get a second opinion. I didn't believe my surgeon at first but he sat down and in detail explained it to me while looking at the xray. If they didnt discuss it and go into detail and show him where exactly the issue is I wouldn't do it.

I might need to. I'm looking at the total for the rest of his teeth (not counting the wisdom teeth) and there are a bunch of $300 charges listed as "enhanced cosmetic" with no billing number to tell me what they are. They are just charged to the patient at $300 each and there are like 6 of them.

Holy smurf. Time for a new person. My regular dentist was able to pull 3 of them total cost to me $50 per tooth (insurance covered the rest) for my last one which required a surgeon and being put under my OOP was just under $500 because insurance wont cover the graft.

Yeah, we're looking at 200 a tooth just for the grafts (5 teeth). He'll need to be put under, so that's another 300 or so. Then for the REST of the work (and granted, he needs a lot), there's a ton of charges that I don't get. Or like, our insurance covers ALL but one type of filling for cavities at no charge, but they're filling with the ONLY type that's like 100 a filling. . .

I'm really not sure about this at all.

Yeah. I mean, it's 2100 just in those "cosmetic enhancement" that have no billing number (for me to look up in my insurance plan) and are just billed directly to the patient. I mean, what aer those!? lol. Sigh. I shouldn't have let him go alone. He doesn't know what questions to ask a dentist.
