McArdle's

posted 3rd Oct
This is a form of muscular dystrophy that SO has, and could either pass on to any children that we may have, or pass the carrier gene onto our children to their children. Does any one have a child or SO with this? I know it is more common in men than women, but there isn't a lot of information online about it.

Umm, a magic unicorn smurf a message telling us he has it? He was tested when he was 15, that doctor is probably dead, and finding another one is nearly impossible.

You can't find a specialist or a geneticist ?

He has been working with the MDA to find a specialist, but it's rare to find one. As of right now it's not a huge bother to him, but he is having more issues as he gets older. I want to know what to expect if we have children and they have it. He happened into getting tested after getting jumped in high school, like I said it was 13 years ago, and they had to cut his arm open, take out muscle, and test it.

Can it be passed on to my children?

The condition is caused by a recessive gene. This means that one abnormal copy of the gene is passed from each parent to the affected child, who in turn will have inherited two abnormal copies of the gene. The risk for both carrier parents to have an affected child is 1:4 for each pregnancy.
People who have McArdle's disease do not usually pass the condition onto their own children because one normal copy of the gene will have been provided by their partner. However, all of their children will be carriers. Generally speaking carriers do not have symptoms.

So our children wouldn't have it, but they would be carrier? Right? I'm apparently stupid on all this. It just came to my mind when he pulled a muscle a few weeks ago and was pissing muscle tissue

Yeah basically they would be a carrier....

How is McArdle’s Disease inherited?
McArdle’s Disease is a recessive genetic disorder, meaning both parents must have a copy of the defective gene. If both parents are carriers, there is a 25% chance in each pregnancy that a child will inherit the disease. If only one parent has the defective gene, then the child is likely to become a carrier. Carriers generally do not have symptoms, but they may pass the gene on to their children. People with a family history may choose to undergo genetic counseling to help understand the risks of passing the gene on to their children.
