Preschool age and colonoscopy

my son has to have a colonoscopy on Tuesday...they think he has a polyp. He has been bleeding on and off since last December. Last December when it started, I had his stool sent in and it came back negative. After that he didn't have any issues until May, but only once. I was told to put him on stool softeners, so I did for about a week. The issue seemed to resolve itself. Well, it started again in August, so I was told to keep him on stool softeners, and it seemed to work for a bit. He bled again Sunday night, and I told them I wanted him to be taken to a pediatric GI. I did today, and now he has to have a colonoscopy. I'm scared that he has to go through this. Has anyone else had this problem?
