Just having genes will not make you an addict.


However-- with that said-- if you have a lot of addiction in your family, chances are you've seen a lot of addictive behaviors-- and IMO, that can make you more susceptible.

There is no debate....some people are gentically bound to be more likely to suffer an addiction of some sort. That does not mean that they will.

I don't believe that addiction is genetic. I think that people that have a parent or close relative that was or is addicted to something are more likely to be addicts because that's what they've always been around. More like a learned behavior.

Because of genes? No. Because of being around that type of behavior and believing it to be acceptable? Yes.

if that was the case i would probably be a meth head lol. but i dont do drugs or drink anymore since being pregnant and am EBF. after smurf happened when i was younger i grew up around my grandparents who did a great job raising me away from drugs and suff.

Absolutely. Addiction is a hereditary disease/personality trait/whatever you want to call it.

I don't think you're destined to be an addict because of your genes but I do think that it makes it easier to become an addict.

I think it may be more likely but it doesn't mean that you will be an addict just because you come from a long line of them. I don't come from a long line of addicts, that I know of, but my dad was an addict and I want nothing to do with drugs. Never tried drugs or was interested.

  my mom is an addict, my grandparents were addicts. I am not an addict.

Addiction comes in many forms. Where your father might have been addicted to drugs you may be addicted to shopping, the internet, etc.

Well, having addicts in your family means that you were most likely subjected to viewing addictive behaviours which may make it more likely for you to become addicted to something.

That said, I was never subjected to addictive behaviours but I became alcohol dependant and hooked on pills, and a food addiction

Yep, I'd be on heroin and drinking my liver away   I did grow up around it, but I grew up hating it.. instead of accepting it. I hardly drink, and when I do.. it's with friends/at home. And I don't do any drugs. It's the main reason I don't think addiction is genetic. If that were the case... at least one of my mom's daughters would be an alcohol addict and/or heroin addict, and none of us are. So.
