Bullying Body Types D&D

posted 3rd Oct
Disclaimer
I do not think it's ever okay to judge someone by their body image.

"This unnatural thinness is a terrible message to send out. The people watching the fashion shows are young, impressionable women."

"Models are not people I want my daughters to look up to. They are not a healthy example for our girls."

"Models in magazines and thin actresses are the reason we have an eating disorder epidemic in the USA."

Is this considered bullying? Why, why not? People are only focusing on her size, but no one lashes out about it. Why? Why is it okay to call someone who has a thin body a bad role model, but it's not okay to say the same thing about someone who is obese and in the spotlight?

I think I love you

To me, it's not right on both sides. Health is health. I have seen super thin women who take very good care of themselves as well as overweight ones. It's a double edged sword.

I would never blame someone who my child has zero contact with for my child having low/high self-esteem.

I think that there should be more body types in the media via modelling as not everyone is thin.

But not every model is starving themselves. Most work out and eat really healthy so their bodies are actually showing how fit and healthy they are, they are just naturally smaller.

I think that this "fat acceptance" thing has tipped over into skinny hate. No matter what your body size, you shouldn't be made to feel ashamed of it

I think bashing any body type is bad... a woman should be taught to love her body just the way it is. Whether she's 90 lbs or 300.

But, for the topic.... I can understand someone's reason for not wanting their kid to look up to supermodels. Most of the models DO have an eating disorder, and it's very hard to get as thin as most of them. Little girls will be like, "Mommy, I wanna be a supermodel when I get older!" ... Well, she won't be unless she has a size 00 waist. Or at a size 8, be considered plus size. Both are very wrong, but I can definitely see someone's perspective of it.

I do not want my child to look up to anyone who cannot take good healthy care of themselves whether it be someone who starves themselves or someone who stuffs their face.

I agree....and I think thats where the parents should step in and explain why some people look like that and why some people look bigger. I feel like alot of parents blame these models for suffering from eating disorders or just being naturally thin.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't blame them for any of my kids problems. Because they aren't physically influencing their life. But I can understand parents being wary of their kids looking up to people with such extreme health styles.

Neither extreme is good, and no assumptions about someone made because they have a specific body type is good.

I don't want my daughter looking upto unhealthy people but in the case of the model in the OP, do we even know if she is unhealthy? Some models are naturally skinny and it's fine to be naturally skinny. I don't agree with models skipping meals and striving to be that skinny but if they are naturally that size then that's ok. Same with fat people. If someone is fat regardless of eating healthily and has a medical condition resulting in them being fat then that's fine but if they are fat because they eat too much and don't exercise then that's not a good role model.
Voicing negetive comments on anyone's appearence can be seen as bullying and can be very damaging. If there's no need to pass comment then why pass a comment.
A friend of mine was massively obese and lost 100lb and was feeling so great about herself. Sure she was still 60lb overweight but had come such a long way and her confidence was high. While we were walking in the street some guys passing her called her an ugly fat whale and other vile comments. They laughed as they walked away. To them it was a moment's fun but to her it was soul destroying. They didn't even consider that she had already lost a load of weight and their comments set her back in her progress.
People just need to think about the person first. they don't know what has happened to them to get to the size they are. maybe they have lost loads of weight, maybe they are recovering from an eating disorder etc. An evil comment could undo a lot of hard work.
As far as models and people in the public eye, there should be a range of models in varying sizes but each one healthy.

Oh I totally agree OP. I get on peoples cases about this ALL THE TIME when they post pictues of skinny women next to a pic of Marylin Monroe and talk about how the skinny women aren't hot, that Marylin Monroe is. Or about "real women have curves" or "bones are for the dogs, meat is for the man." They are ALL demeaning and horrible. We shouldn't judge people based on their size either way.
